PhD Nursing Programs

PhD in nursing programs in Tennessee

Best PhD in Nursing Programs in Tennessee, Ranked (2026)

Seventy-two credits is the median coursework load at the five PhD in nursing programs in Tennessee, and the median full-time finish is 3.5 years. Those two numbers together tell you how fast the coursework comes at you. Four of the five programs accept part-time students, and going part-time doesn't reduce the 72 credits, it spreads them across more years. So the first question isn't which program ranks highest. It's how many courses a term you can carry alongside whatever job pays your rent, and whether Johnson City, Knoxville, Memphis, or Nashville is where you'd be carrying them.

How We Ranked the Best PhD in Nursing Programs in Tennessee

Campus and online programs are scored on separate models, because they compete on different things, and this page lists both together with each one's score from its own model. Research funding comes from NIH RePORTER, doctoral scale from federal IPEDS completions, and the curriculum, funding and deadline figures from each school's own pages. The full scoring model is here.

You leave with three papers rather than one bound book. The three-manuscript dissertation publishes your work as you go, and Knoxville sits on close to half of Tennessee's federal nursing research money.

Where it wins. $2.09 million of the $4.29 million in NINR awards held across all five Tennessee programs, and eight PhDs conferred, the most in the state. Three entry points, plus a DNP-to-PhD route that finishes in three years part-time.

What you give up. Eighty-three credits is the heaviest load in Tennessee, about $53,037 at $639 a credit against $34,980 at Memphis. The doctoral intensives cannot be missed, made up or substituted, so those on-campus dates are immovable.

Funding. College of Nursing scholarships require the January 7 priority application deadline; no guaranteed tuition-plus-stipend package is described.

Research. technology, symptom science, caregiving, translation science.

East Tennessee State University

PhD in Nursing

Johnson City, TN · Public · scores 67.6

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

ETSU is the one Tennessee program you can finish without ever standing on the campus. The semester intensives run on Zoom, so the travel every other program in the state treats as non-negotiable simply is not.

Where it wins. Asynchronous coursework with 2-3 day intensives you attend by Zoom or in Johnson City, your call. Rural health is a named focus, and Tennessee's faculty median of $80,050 sits within $1,500 of the state's RN median, so the move into teaching costs little here.

What you give up. Five to seven students admitted each fall makes for a tiny cohort and competitive admission, and no NINR-funded research operates in the building, so your support is faculty time rather than a funded lab.

Funding. Graduate assistantships, tuition scholarships and Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) grants are available. Funding is not guaranteed.

Research. Rural Health, Nursing Education and Simulation.

Vanderbilt University

PhD in Nursing Science

Nashville, TN · Private nonprofit · scores 63.5

  • Fully funded
  • No GRE

Tennessee's only funded nursing doctorate, and it is delivered online, which is an unusual pairing anywhere. The catch is that funded here means tuition, and full-time enrolment is mandatory, so the job goes regardless.

Where it wins. Tuition fully funded for up to four years of required didactic and research coursework, in a state where the other four programs expect you to pay your own way. Weekly synchronous classes tie you to live faculty research projects rather than standalone coursework.

What you give up. Vanderbilt admits only when a faculty member already works in your area, so your question has to fit their bench. Full-time only, with no part-time route, in a state where four of five programs offer one.

Funding. Student tuition is fully funded, covering up to four years of required didactic and research coursework.

Research. Acute and Chronic Illness, Maternal and Child Health, pain management, sleep and substance use disorders, pregnancy outcomes.

UT Health Science Center

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science

Memphis, TN · Public · scores 61.3

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

You are admitted to the College of Graduate Health Sciences here, not to the nursing college, on a campus of roughly 3,100 students. That structural difference decides who you sit next to for three years.

Where it wins. Biostatistics, health policy and medical ethics are taken alongside doctoral students from the rest of the health science center, which is why the research reads bio-behavioral rather than educational. Dissertation research can be conducted in Memphis or anywhere else.

What you give up. An on-campus week opens and closes every term, and the first two terms carry weekly or biweekly face-to-face meetings, so Memphis is not optional early. The March 15 deadline also sits behind a February 1 priority date.

Research. bio-behavioral interactions and interventions, improving patient outcomes.

$583 a credit, $34,980 across the 60-credit degree, makes this the cheapest doctorate in Tennessee, roughly $18,000 under UT Knoxville. It is also the only one in the state with a spring intake.

Where it wins. You choose the dissertation format, five traditional chapters or a proposal plus two data-driven manuscripts submitted for publication. A post-DNP pathway transfers up to 15 credits, and admission runs twice a year rather than once.

What you give up. Residency rules require the final 30 credits, including all nine dissertation hours, be earned at Memphis, so transfer credit only helps at the front end. No NINR-funded research operates here.

Funding. The program refers only to 'limited program funding options' and directs applicants to contact the PhD program director; full-time students with graduate assistantships must enroll for 9 credit hours each semester.

Research. health equity, nursing and interdisciplinary research, nursing education research.

What Nursing Faculty and Nurse Researchers Earn in Tennessee

Nursing faculty in Tennessee earn a median of $80,050, within a couple hundred dollars of the national faculty median of $80,250. The comparison next door is the unusual part. Tennessee's registered nurses have a median of $81,500, so moving from bedside to a faculty line costs you about $1,450 at the midpoint, a smaller step down than most nurses expect. That says less about faculty pay than about RN pay here, which sits well under the national RN median of $97,550. Faculty earnings run from $60,090 at the tenth percentile to $109,830 at the ninetieth, across roughly 1,150 postsecondary nursing instructor jobs statewide.

The full pay table by state puts these numbers beside every other state, and the career pages cover what else a nursing PhD opens up.

Why Does Tennessee Award so Many Nursing Doctorates?

About 190 nursing doctorates come out of Tennessee schools each year, a high number for a state with five PhD programs, and the formats explain most of it. East Tennessee State in Johnson City and Vanderbilt in Nashville teach online. Tennessee-Knoxville, the Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, and the University of Memphis run hybrid. Programs built that way can enroll nurses who keep working, and four of the five take part-time students.

Volume and research money are different things, though. Tennessee programs drew about $4.3 million in NIH nursing research awards from FY2021 through FY2025, split five ways, and one of the five comes with funding attached. Most students here pay their own tuition.

That's workable if you want the doctorate for a faculty or leadership role. If you want a research career paid for by grants, ask each program which faculty hold current awards and whether a doctoral student gets paid off one.
