Best On-Campus PhD in Nursing Programs, Ranked for 2026

Every campus-based PhD in nursing program in the United States, scored on the research money behind it, what it pays its own doctoral students, and how long it takes to finish. Each card says where that program actually wins and what you give up choosing it. Online programs run on their own list.

What Actually Separates On-Campus PhD in Nursing Programs

Not the curriculum. Nearly every program on this list runs the same spine: theory, quantitative and qualitative methods, statistics, a qualifying exam, a dissertation. Comparing course lists across 92 programs tells you almost nothing, which is why this page does not.

What separates them is money and people. $484M in National Institute of Nursing Research awards sits behind these programs, and 34% of it is held by five schools. That concentration is the single most useful thing to understand before you apply, because a funded study you can join is worth more than a course catalogue. It also means the gap between the top of this list and the middle is mostly a gap in what is happening in the building, not in what is taught.

65 of the 92 are public. That matters less than it would at master's level, because a funded PhD makes the sticker price close to irrelevant, and it matters a lot if you are looking at the 73 programs that do not publish full funding.

How We Ranked the Best On-Campus PhD in Nursing Programs

Six factors, weighted to sum to 100: nursing research funding at 25%, student funding at 22%, doctoral program scale at 18%, time and cost to degree at 13%, program structure at 12%, access and flexibility at 10%. Research funding comes from NIH RePORTER, doctoral scale from federal IPEDS completions, and everything else from the pages each school publishes. The full model is here.

UW Seattle

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD)

Seattle, WA · Public · scores 93.8

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

Third-largest federal nursing research portfolio on this list, and it's split across 67 separate awards rather than concentrated in one center. Your first year is about choosing which funded study to join, not inventing one from a standing start.

Where it wins. Those 67 awards average just under $500,000 apiece, which means dozens of investigators with live money and room for a doctoral student on the payroll. It's also one of only four programs here that pays its students and still keeps a part-time door open.

What you give up. Three years of funding against a program that carries the largest credit requirement on this list, tied with one other. Part-time study is allowed, but the package is written for full-time students, so the flexible route is the unfunded one.

Funding. All full-time PhD students receive a three-year funding package, including tuition and a stipend.

Research. Symptom science, Laboratory sciences, Health promotion and disease management across the lifespan, Policy analysis and advancement of cost-effective health care systems, Health equity, Innovative methodologies.

The deepest pool of active nursing research on this page, by a distance that is hard to overstate. You come here for the scale of what is already running, and you accept that the program bends for almost nobody.

Where it wins. Its $41.87M in NINR across 96 separate awards is 8.6 percent of every NINR dollar held by the 92 programs here, and more than the 62 lowest-funded of them put together. That means funded studies you can join rather than build.

What you give up. Six to twelve seats a year is a brutal gate, and four years of funding sits under a three-to-five-year completion window. Part-time study is allowed, but part-timers pay their own tuition, fees and insurance.

Funding. Penn Nursing commits to assisting all full-time PhD students for four years of tuition, fees, living stipend, and health insurance, funded internally or externally; part-time students pay their own tuition, fees and health insurance.

Columbia

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

New York, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 85.7

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

Come here for access to running studies, not for a gentle pace. The scholarship bar is written into graduation itself: one published manuscript, one grant submitted, one abstract presented, before anyone signs off.

Where it wins. Its $33.6 million in NINR funding sits across 82 separate awards averaging about $410,000 each, second-highest on this list and more than the 23 smallest-funded programs here combined. You are picking a mentor from a bench that deep, not hoping one has room.

What you give up. Funding runs three years, or eight semesters, against a published three to four, so budget for the gap. No part-time seat exists, and the school awarded 7 PhDs against 125 DNPs, making your cohort the small one in the building.

Funding. "Columbia Nursing provides three years (eight semesters) of funding for tuition, related fees, health insurance, and a stipend for full-time PhD students."

Research. health disparity populations, clinical, translational and health services research.

Duke University

PhD Program in Nursing

Durham, NC · Private nonprofit · scores 85.6

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

Only seven programs on this list hold more federal nursing research money, and Duke's is spread across 41 separate awards rather than one flagship grant. You pick a funded line and attach yourself to it.

Where it wins. The support package is written to run longer than the coursework plan, so the year you spend rewriting chapter three is still a paid year. Elective credits can also be taken at three other research universities in the Triangle.

What you give up. Duke's nursing school graduates practice doctorates at more than fifteen times the rate it graduates PhDs, so the doctoral culture around you is mostly DNP. Find your research cohort early, because it is small.

Funding. "Ph.D. student tuition and 12-month stipends are fully funded for up to five years," with a package that "should provide financial support (tuition, stipend, health insurance) for the majority of the time you are registered and working toward your degree."

Research. health equity, social determinants of health (SDOH), nurse-led models of care.

New York University

Florence S. Downs PhD Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development

New York, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 84.9

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

The rare combination here: top-ten research money, a cohort of four or five, and a part-time door. If you want a large grant portfolio without a large program, this is the shortest list you will find.

Where it wins. Funding runs four years against a three-year plan of study, so the money outlasts the timeline instead of expiring under you. It is also one of only four programs on this list that guarantees full funding and still admits part-time students.

What you give up. Cohorts of four or five mean the four named research areas are the whole menu; a question outside them has no second advisor waiting. And 46 credits price out near $119,000 at NYU's per-credit rate if funding ever lapses.

Funding. "We guarantee all students four years of funding, including tuition, stipend, and health insurance"; the full-time option "includes stipend support, benefits, and tuition remission for required coursework."

Research. Aging and Serious Illness, Health Services Research, Maternal, Reproductive, and Child Health, Population Precision Health and Chronic Conditions.

University of California-Los Angeles

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Los Angeles, CA · Public · scores 81.9

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

The doctoral operation here is research only, with no practice doctorate sharing the faculty, and 17 active NINR awards mean funded studies already exist for you to join. Come with a question about aging or chronic disease in underserved populations.

Where it wins. Seventeen NINR awards worth $11.3 million puts UCLA in the top 15 of the 92 campus programs for funded research, and its doctoral output is ten PhDs against zero practice doctorates, so faculty attention isn't split between two degrees.

What you give up. The tuition guarantee is written at the in-state rate for four years and the nonresident supplement is covered only in year one, so out-of-state students carry that difference from year two unless they establish California residency.

Funding. 'UCLA School of Nursing PhD students are guaranteed full in-state tuition support funding for the first four years of their program,' a non-resident supplemental tuition grant covers non-residents in year one, and additional funding opportunities 'can provide up to $30,000 in annual financial support to be allocated towards room, board, and ordinary living expenses, in addition to full tuition and fee coverage.'

Research. health of diverse and vulnerable populations, older adults, persons with chronic and communicable diseases.

Fourteen NINR awards averaging about $468,000 apiece means the research money is spread across many separate studies rather than concentrated in one lab. You pick a methodological lane in year two, quantitative or qualitative, and that choice shapes everything after it.

Where it wins. Nine doctorates conferred a year and zero DNP graduates, so faculty attention isn't split between a research degree and a bigger practice program. That output ranks in the top 16 of the 92 campus programs, and the $6.55 million in NINR lands in the top quarter.

What you give up. Tuition coverage is the in-state rate and runs three years, while the published finish is three to four. The stipend also steps down, $22,000 in the first year for the 2024 entering cohort and $18,000 in each of the two years after.

Funding. 'In-state tuition and fees are fully covered for the first three years,' plus a stipend of $22,000 for students entering fall 2024 in 2024-2025, $18,000 for 2025-2026 and $18,000 for 2026-2027, with additional scholarships, grants and employment possible in later years.

Johns Hopkins University

Nursing, Doctor of Philosophy

Baltimore, MD · Private nonprofit · scores 80.7

  • Fully funded
  • No GRE

A research doctorate run like a job, with a bargained contract behind it. Come for the largest funded portfolio on this list, and accept that the school sets your schedule year round, summers included.

Where it wins. It holds more NINR money than the 59 lowest-funded programs on this list put together, and its 17 PhD completions land in the top six here. You join funded studies that already exist rather than talking a new one into being.

What you give up. Guaranteed funding starts at four years while the published finish is four to five, so year five may fall on you. Every semester carries a research residency plus a teaching assignment of ten to fifteen hours a week.

Funding. Minimum four years of guaranteed funding for all PhD student employees in the School of Nursing; AY 2026-27 compensation of $52,000 effective July 1, 2026, with the University paying premiums for the Student Health Benefits Plan including dental and vision, plus per-child dependent subsidies of up to $12,000 per family per year.

Indiana University-Indianapolis

PhD in Nursing Science

Indianapolis, IN · Public · scores 80.3

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

Built around a schedule a working nurse can actually hold, with required doctoral courses landing on one known day each week in Indianapolis. That single constraint shapes the program, and it's why people finish here who would otherwise stall.

Where it wins. The research money is real rather than decorative. Twenty-one NINR awards averaging close to $480,000 put it inside the top fifth of campus programs here for federal nursing research, and every student is paired with a faculty investigator for the length of the program.

What you give up. Funding is competitive rather than automatic, so admission and money arrive as two separate decisions. The credit requirement is also among the five largest on this list, which is roughly what a one-day-a-week schedule costs you in calendar time.

Funding. The IU School of Nursing offers competitive funding for PhD students, including tuition remission, a stipend, and health insurance. Funding is competitive rather than automatic.

Research. Clinical Nursing Science, Health Systems, Behavioral oncology across the cancer continuum, Family caregiving across the lifespan, Nursing informatics, Health policy and public policy analysis.

Yale University

PhD Program in Nursing

New Haven, CT · Private nonprofit · scores 80.1

  • Fully funded
  • No GRE

Funding runs four years and the published length is four years, so the money and the degree end together, which almost nothing else here manages. A small program that makes the end of year two the real gate.

Where it wins. Only 19 of the 92 programs on this page fund at all, and this package covers tuition, health care and a stipend for all four years while faculty steer you toward an F31. The $10.7M in NINR arrives as few, large grants, roughly $510,000 each against a $412,000 average here.

What you give up. You need a master's first, since this is one of 21 programs here that will not take a BSN nurse directly, and there is no part-time route. The qualifying exam is a defended dissertation proposal, which compresses everything before it.

Funding. All students are fully funded, including tuition, healthcare, and a monthly stipend for 4 years; students are also mentored toward external dissertation funding such as NIH F31 awards.

Research. chronic conditions and family management, symptom science, maternal and child health, sleep disorders, health equity, palliative care.

Columbus, OH · Public · scores 79.4

Completions are the signal here, not research dollars. It hands out more nursing PhDs in a year than all but two programs on this list, which for a doctoral applicant is arguably the more useful number.

Where it wins. Grant writing is taught in year one and every student must submit an external application before finishing, and those submissions have been funded at 65 percent over the past three years. You leave with a funding record, not just a defended dissertation.

What you give up. The PhD Scholars award covers up to three years against a published three to five, carries a 20-hour weekly research or teaching obligation, and is competitive rather than automatic. Ask where you stand on it before you accept a seat.

Funding. College of Nursing PhD Scholars awards cover "up to three years of tuition and instructional fees, stipend, and health insurance contingent on satisfactory academic progress and performance as a Graduate Research/Teaching Associate," with a 20-hour weekly work requirement; faculty also nominate applicants for University Fellowships. Awards are competitive rather than automatic.

Research. Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care, Martha S. Pitzer Center for Women, Children and Youth, Translational Biosciences Laboratory, Stress Science Laboratory.

Pitt

PhD in Nursing

Pittsburgh, PA · Public · scores 79.2

  • BSN-to-PhD

One of only six programs here that reads applications on a rolling basis, and it turns decisions in four to six weeks. If you need an answer before you resign from a job, that matters more than the brochure.

Where it wins. Pitt's federal nursing research money is spread across 42 separate awards, more distinct funded projects than all but seven programs here, and it pairs you with an investigator in your first term instead of after coursework. You arrive into work that already has money.

What you give up. For a public school Pitt charges near the top of this list per credit, dearer than three quarters of the programs that publish a rate, and the funding is competitive rather than automatic. Ask what your offer is before you accept.

Funding. The program states funding is available to support doctoral study through stipends, tuition benefits and fellowships; the school's scholarships the program describes the K. Leroy Irvis Fellowship as a non-duty-bearing fellowship for the first year of doctoral study for distinguished doctoral applicants.

Emory University

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Atlanta, GA · Private nonprofit · scores 78.4

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD

Come here if you want many possible advisors rather than one famous one. The grant book is broad and shallow by design, which suits a student still narrowing a question more than one arriving with a finished protocol.

Where it wins. NINR money arrives across 91 separate awards, the third-highest award count on this list, averaging about $311,000 apiece. That is a building full of modest independent studies rather than two mega-centers, so more principal investigators have room to take you on.

What you give up. Outside work is capped at ten hours a week and the stipend renews one year at a time, so you re-earn your funding annually while unable to nurse enough to backstop it.

Funding. "All full-time admitted students are granted full tuition waiver and receive an annual stipend over 12 months in exchange for teaching and research services," renewed annually "for a total of four years," plus Professional Development Support Funds from Laney Graduate School.

Research. Aging Studies/Caregiving, Artificial Intelligence/Data Science, Cardiovascular/Brain/Biomarkers, Natural Disaster and Environmental Science, Oncology, Women's Health.

Utah pairs a top-ten research portfolio with distance coursework, which is a rare combination at this level. The published 83 percent completion rate also tells you what attrition actually looks like before you commit three years of classes.

Where it wins. Ninth of the 92 campus programs for NINR money at $17.9 million across 28 awards, and that portfolio sits behind a hybrid format, so you can attach yourself to funded work without moving to Salt Lake City. Nine week-long immersions over three years is the whole residency ask.

What you give up. Sixty-nine credits runs heavier than three quarters of the programs here that publish a count, delivered year-round across seven semesters, and every one of those campus weeks is travel you have to plan a job around.

University of Cincinnati

PhD in Nursing

Cincinnati, OH · Public · scores 75.5

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

Candidacy runs on a portfolio instead of a written exam, which rewards steady output over one high-stakes week. Pair that with a three-year full-time plan and a final materials date in May, and you get a research doctorate with unusually few chokepoints.

Where it wins. Fifteen separate NINR awards, a count only 25 of these 92 programs reach, and the money arrives in roughly $389,000 pieces rather than one block. That many active studies means more places for a student to join work already running.

What you give up. Ninety-six DNP graduates against 8 PhDs puts you in the small program inside a college organized around practice. The two named research areas, opioids and violence against nurses, are narrow enough that a mismatched question is hard to place.

Research. opioid epidemic, nurse violence.

University of Rochester

PhD in Nursing & Health Science

Rochester, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 74.2

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

One of four programs here that funds its doctoral students fully and still lets them enroll part time. The five named research areas are narrow enough that you can tell before applying whether your question has a home.

Where it wins. Health insurance is covered for six years while the post-BS stipend runs four, which tells you what the school actually expects the back half to look like. Its NINR portfolio beats the 50 lowest-funded programs here combined.

What you give up. Three PhDs came out in the reported year, so the cohort ahead of you is thin and the seminar table is small. The part-time route stretches to five years, past the funded window.

Funding. 100% tuition waiver for full-time PhD students plus an annual stipend; post-BS students receive a tuition waiver for required coursework credit, a competitive stipend for the first four years of study, and health insurance coverage for the first six years.

Research. Sexual Health & HIV, Oncology & Palliative Care, Healthy Aging, Cardiac Care, Parent-Child & Adolescent Health.

UIC

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Chicago, IL · Public · scores 73.2

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

A high-volume producer of nursing PhDs sitting inside a college whose main business is the practice doctorate. That combination hands you an unusual number of funded projects to attach to and a lot of company that isn't doing research.

Where it wins. Thirty-two separate NINR awards, more than all but about a dozen programs here, averaging roughly $222,000 each. The money is spread across many modest studies instead of one empire, which means more investigators to work under and more openings where a student project actually fits.

What you give up. The college graduates roughly eight practice doctorates for every PhD, so the research degree is the minority program in the building. Classes meeting Wednesdays and Thursdays still means living within commuting distance of Chicago.

University of Maryland, Baltimore

PhD in Nursing

Baltimore, MD · Public · scores 72.6

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

One day a week in Baltimore is the entire design, and six named research areas let you work out in advance whether your question has a home. Funding is the part you have to negotiate for yourself.

Where it wins. Your four PhD electives can be redirected into a graduate certificate in real-world data or in teaching, so you leave with a second credential on the same timeline and the same bill. The school also holds $3.68M in NINR across nine awards, 33rd among the 92 programs here.

What you give up. Assistantships carry a stipend, tuition remission and in-state status, but nothing is promised at admission. With 156 DNPs conferred against 6 PhDs, the building's center of gravity sits on the practice side.

Funding. Graduate assistantships provide 'stipend, tuition remission, in-state status, and paid student health insurance'; merit scholarships of $1,500-$3,000 per semester and the Conway Scholarship (full in-state tuition and fees) are also listed, but funding is not guaranteed to all admitted students.

Research. Aging Populations, Cardiovascular Health, Health Systems Outcomes, Implementation Science, Pain and Symptom Science, Palliative and End-of-Life Care.

U-M Ann Arbor

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.)

Ann Arbor, MI · Public · scores 70.3

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD

Coursework is deliberately thin so the apprenticeship can be thick. Forty-two credits is the lightest classroom load on this list, and the hours you save go into 20 a week of supervised research across nine or twelve terms.

Where it wins. The funding is published as dollars rather than promises: packages of $231,950 to $363,960 depending on plan and residency, with stipends of $38,640 to $41,010 a year. Its $23.3 million in NINR runs across 46 awards averaging over $500,000 apiece.

What you give up. Enrollment is required in three terms a year with no part-time route, so this replaces your job outright. The school awarded 1 PhD against 53 DNPs, so confirm your specific faculty match is taking students before you commit.

Funding. Both the three-year accelerated and four-year traditional plans are listed as 'Fully funded'; the published packages of tuition support, stipend and benefits are projected at $231,950 (in-state) to $297,820 (out-of-state) over three years, and $292,960 to $363,960 over four years, with stipends of $38,640-$41,010 per year.

  • No GRE
  • Part time

A hybrid with real funded science behind it. More than half the distance-flexible programs on this list hold no federal nursing research money at all, and UAB holds eight figures of it, which is what makes the flexibility worth taking.

Where it wins. The credit load is heavier than all but five programs here, but the resident rate sits in the cheapest third, so the total sticker lands mid-pack. You buy more coursework for average money, and you can keep working while you do it.

What you give up. Taking coursework at a distance costs $98 more per credit, which over the full program is about $8,500 you pay for not driving to Birmingham. The school also graduates roughly 25 practice doctorates for every PhD.

Funding. 'Full time students may be eligible for a limited number of Graduate Fellowships and Traineeships' awarded through the School of Nursing only when funds are available, plus need- and merit-based school scholarships awarded twice a year.

Research. Clinical Trials and Precision Health, Emerging Technology, Health Science, Implementation Science, Social Determinants of Health.

UNC Chapel Hill

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Chapel Hill, NC · Public · scores 70.3

  • Fully funded

A training program in getting your own money more than a program that spends its own on you. If your five-year plan runs through an F31 and then an R01, the track record is the argument.

Where it wins. Over five years, 73 percent of students who applied for NIH F31 grants got them. That is a mentoring pipeline you can measure, and it matters more here than the NINR total, which already sits inside the top fifth of this list.

What you give up. The three-year package goes to top scholars picked during admissions, not to everyone admitted, and years four and five are a possibility rather than a plan. Full-time study is the only mode, so there is no fallback if the award goes elsewhere.

Funding. Top scholars identified during the admissions process receive a package of stipend, full tuition coverage, fees and health insurance guaranteed for three years, with the possibility of extending support into years four and five.

Gainesville, FL · Public · scores 69.8

  • BSN-to-PhD

Three years, in-state public pricing, and $10.9 million of NINR-funded work in the building is an unusual combination, and the T32 fellowship in translational science means some students draw a federal training stipend instead of an assistantship.

Where it wins. At $530.69 per credit this sits among the ten cheapest of the 59 campus programs that publish a rate, while its 26 NINR awards rank fifteenth of 92. Low cost and research density rarely show up together.

What you give up. Support is assembled from whichever faculty member has an assistantship open rather than promised at admission, and the program is full time only, so the three-year clock assumes you have already stopped working.

Funding. "All of our PhD students receive some form of funding", support varies by graduate research assistantship positions provided by faculty, plus scholarships, assistantships and federal aid.

You leave with three publishable manuscripts instead of one bound document, which is the difference between finishing and being hireable. The hybrid label is real, but the intensives are not optional, so the calendar bends less than the format suggests.

Where it wins. At $639 a credit, only 15 of the 59 programs posting a rate charge less, and the 83-credit BSN-to-PhD plan works out to roughly $53,000 in tuition. The three-manuscript dissertation puts your publication record in motion during coursework rather than after it.

What you give up. Eighty-three credits is the eighth-heaviest load among the 69 programs publishing a number. The intensives cannot be missed, made up, or substituted, so budget travel days every term that you have no flexibility on.

Funding. College of Nursing scholarships require the January 7 priority application deadline; no guaranteed tuition-plus-stipend package is described.

Austin, TX · Public · scores 68.2

Ten PhDs a year and no DNP at all, so faculty attention is not divided between two doctoral populations. The catch is that the money arrives one year at a time and has to be won again.

Where it wins. One of eight programs on this list awarding ten or more PhDs annually with no practice doctorate alongside it, which changes who your advisors are supervising. The portfolio option adds coursework in gerontology, Mexican American studies or women's studies.

What you give up. Fellowships run $7,000 to $25,000 for a single year and continuing awards are competitive, so you re-earn the money annually against a four-year clock. November 1 is the fellowship gate, not just the application date.

Funding. One-year PhD fellowships ranging from $7,000 to $25,000 for applicants who complete the application by November 1, with competitive continuing fellowships after year one; School of Nursing scholarships usually $1,000-$2,000; RA/TA/Assistant Instructor appointments carry tuition and benefits assistance based on hours per week.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Heavy research money, very few doctoral graduates. That ratio is the whole argument for coming here: attention and resources per student are about as concentrated as they get, and you will know every person in your cohort by name.

Where it wins. Divide the federal nursing research money in the building by the three PhDs it graduates in a year and you get over four million dollars per annual graduate, one of the ten highest ratios on this list. Five decades of practice show in the five entry pathways.

What you give up. Miss the Legacy Fellows award and you pay sticker: 57 credits at the published rate runs near $136,000. That fellowship is also closed to international applicants, so a whole class of candidates can't compete for the money at all.

Funding. The Legacy Fellows Program awards "Full tuition support for up to four years, up to $200,000, with an optional extension of one additional year with approval" plus a "$6,000 educational allowance per academic year" and a 20-hour-per-week research assistantship, but it is a competitive fellowship restricted to U.S. citizens/permanent residents rather than a package guaranteed to every admitted student.

Two different programs share one name. The Conway fellowship track is funded, fast and full of strings; the traditional track is none of those, and what separates them is roughly the price of the degree.

Where it wins. Forty-six credits at $1,710 puts the traditional sticker near $78,660, and the Conway award is $80,000 over three years, so the fellowship covers the degree almost exactly. Eleven PhDs conferred is top-ten output on this page from a school sitting 36th in research money.

What you give up. Conway fellows cap outside work at 10 hours a week and commit to teaching afterward, which rules out anyone who needs a nursing paycheck. Summer sessions are on campus every year of coursework, so the distance format has a hard floor.

Funding. Joanne and William Conway PhD Fellows are "awarded $80,000 over three years to finance your education," usable for living expenses, tuition and/or fees; the traditional track is not described as funded.

The research development model leans outward: Boston-area health centers for clinical data, colloquia and graduate courses at neighboring institutions for method. You are meant to build a network beyond the school, and the program is small enough that you have to.

Where it wins. Every full-time PhD student gets three years of tuition, fees and insurance covered, one of only nineteen guaranteed-funding programs here. The 46-credit load is light too; just seven programs on this list ask for fewer, which leaves the calendar to research rather than seat time.

What you give up. Three funded years against a four-year plan leaves one on you, and at $1,952 a credit that is the fifth-priciest rate among programs here publishing one. A 3.5 GPA floor also screens harder than most of this list.

Funding. The Connell School fully funds every full-time Ph.D. student's tuition, fees, and insurance for three years.

The format and the money pull in opposite directions here. Weekend intensives are built for a nurse who keeps working, but the scholarship requires full-time enrollment and under twenty hours of paid work, so the flexible path is the self-funded one.

Where it wins. Federal nursing research money here averages more than $800,000 per award, so the science is concentrated in a few large grants rather than scattered thin. The on-campus requirement also ends once you enroll in dissertation, which shortens the commuting years.

What you give up. Multiply the rate by the credit count and this is the fourth most expensive program on the list you can price out, close to $100,000 before living costs. There is no BSN entry, so you need the master's first.

Funding. Scholarship funding is available to select applicants; recipients must be enrolled full-time, work no more than 20 hours a week, remain continuously enrolled, and exhaust employer tuition benefits first. Funding is reviewed and awarded annually.

  • No GRE

Small enough that the numbers are checkable. Eight students per cohort against seven doctorates conferred in a year is a tight ratio, and it tells you more about whether people finish than any support page will.

Where it wins. Required coursework includes historical inquiry alongside the usual qualitative and quantitative methods, which almost no nursing PhD teaches. If your question is how a piece of nursing practice or policy came to be this way, the method is actually taught here.

What you give up. Completion runs as long as seven years, while the teaching-assistant support that carries the stipend is listed at three years for BSN entrants and two for MSN entrants. Ask current students what year five cost them.

Funding. All students admitted to the PhD program are eligible for four years of scholarship covering tuition, insurance and fees, plus a stipend, in exchange for serving as a graduate teaching assistant 10 hours per week; MSN-entry students get two years and BSN-entry three years of graduate teaching assistant support per the DNP/PhD comparison table.

WashU

PhD in Nursing Science

St. Louis, MO · Private nonprofit · scores 65.2

  • Part time

A nursing science department housed inside a medical school, holding $6.1 million of NINR while conferring about one PhD a year. That ratio is the argument: research money in the top quarter of this list, cohort the size of a seminar table.

Where it wins. Thirteen NINR awards averaging $469,000 against a program graduating roughly one doctorate a year, which is about as much funded research per student as anything here. The required cognate in informatics, clinical investigation, or implementation science also forces a second technical skill you can name.

What you give up. One graduate a year means almost no cohort, so your peer group is whoever else happens to be in the building that term. The part-time route runs five to seven years against a nine-year ceiling, which leaves less slack than it sounds.

Research. sleep health and metabolic disease, nurse well-being and moral resilience, veterans' health and loneliness, pain management in palliative care, global health, clinical informatics and health technology.

The strongest research-money-to-price ratio on this list. Serious funded science in the building, a small doctoral population to share it with, and a credit hour that undercuts almost everyone here.

Where it wins. Eleventh on this list for NINR funding, ahead of the 53 lowest-funded programs combined, and fourth-cheapest per credit among the programs here that publish a rate. Sixty-six credits at $378 works out to $24,948 in tuition.

What you give up. Funding is scholarships you compete for rather than a stipend that arrives with admission, and the BSN entry point runs 90 credits, $34,020, across eleven to sixteen semesters. The credit hour is cheap; the credit count is not.

Funding. Scholarships are awarded to PhD students based on research interests in addition to academic performance and financial need; the school describes itself as one of the most affordable PhD programs in Texas.

Boca Raton, FL · Public · scores 63.1

  • BSN-to-PhD

The weekend program for nurses who won't quit their jobs, priced low enough that the arithmetic changes what a doctorate costs. It also asks you to commit to a particular philosophy of nursing, which is a genuine fit question rather than branding.

Where it wins. Sixty credits at $371.81 works out to roughly $22,300 in tuition for the entire doctorate, well under half what the median per-credit rate here would charge for the same load. It still turns out ten PhDs a year, top-15 output among these 92 programs.

What you give up. Caring science isn't a flavor here, it's the frame your dissertation has to sit inside, and the program outcomes are written that way. With no federal nursing research portfolio in the college, you build and fund your study yourself.

Kingston, RI · Public · scores 61.4

A small program with unusually specific populations attached to it, aimed at a master's-prepared nurse. Do the funding arithmetic before you accept, because two funding routes here behave very differently.

Where it wins. The endowed Barcott-Kim Fellowship carries tuition, health benefits and a stipend across all three years for a 10-hour weekly teaching load. The ordinary assistantship covers two years. Six research areas run from telehealth to adolescent risk behavior, which is narrow enough to check your fit.

What you give up. On the standard assistantship you self-fund a year or more against a three-to-four-year degree. Research money is $1.56M, 42nd among the 92 programs here, so the number of active studies you could attach to is small.

Funding. Qualified full-time Ph.D. students who obtain a graduate assistantship/teaching assistantship receive full-time tuition, health benefits and a stipend for two years; Barcott-Kim Fellowships add a 10-hour/week teaching assistantship covering tuition, health benefits and a stipend over three years.

Research. Health equity and disparities, Health promotion, Infants and families, Adolescent and emerging adult health and risk behaviors, Telehealth, Implementation science.

Serious research money sits behind a schedule a working nurse can actually keep, which is a combination the rest of this list rarely manages. Nursing courses meet one Saturday a month, and you can take that Saturday remotely.

Where it wins. The NINR base here outranks 75 of the 92 programs on this list, and its 18 awards average $582,000 apiece, the seventh-largest per-award figure in the field. The epidemiology and social-behavioral tracks route through an MPH, so you leave with population methods most nursing PhDs never touch.

What you give up. No guaranteed package comes with admission; the aid on offer is a limited number of teaching assistantships and loan forgiveness that requires you to teach afterward. The MPH tracks also run 69 to 75 credits, well above the 48 the standard route needs.

Funding. The Nurse Faculty Loan Program 'will eliminate up to 85% of student loans for students who plan to teach at any accredited school of nursing'; a limited number of teaching assistantship positions are available each year.

Built for a nurse who will travel but not move. You come to Memphis for a week at the start and end of each term, and the dissertation research itself can happen where you already live and practice.

Where it wins. Six to ten students enter each year, small enough that faculty know your project by name. Because admission runs through the graduate health sciences college, your coursework and your peers come from outside nursing by default, which shows up in how you frame a question.

What you give up. Federal nursing research money runs to three awards, so there is a short menu of funded studies to join and you will likely design your own. The credit load also runs heavier than four fifths of the list.

OHSU

Portland, OR · Public · scores 61.1

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

OHSU makes you name a faculty match inside the application, which reads like a hurdle and works as a filter in your favor. You find out before you enroll whether anyone in the building works on your question.

Where it wins. Six named research areas, from sleep and circadian rhythms to symptom biology in heart failure, are specific enough to test your own question against, and $5.8 million across 12 NINR awards puts OHSU in the top third of the 92 campus programs.

What you give up. The published range runs three to seven years and the midpoint of five is longer than all but a handful of programs on this list, so ask current students what happened to them between year four and year seven.

Funding. Funding is not guaranteed. The program points applicants to nursing scholarships and loan forgiveness/repayment programs, and lists tuition at "$700 per credit for Oregon residents and $908 for non-residents."

The six-year part-time plan is the product here, not a concession. Half the campus programs on this list allow part time, and this one publishes the plan of study that goes with it, so you see the whole obligation before you commit.

Where it wins. Three named research areas, symptom science, health services research, and health promotion, give you enough specificity to test your fit before applying, and the part-time structure is built for someone keeping a clinical job. Four years full time, six part time, both published.

What you give up. Sixty-six credits at $978.25 puts the sticker near $64,600, and the scholarship window opens in January and closes March 1, after admission decisions land. Funding is a competition you enter later, not a package that arrives with the offer.

Funding. College of Nursing scholarship applications open in January and close March 1. There is no program-wide tuition-plus-stipend guarantee.

Rutgers New Brunswick

New Brunswick, NJ · Public · scores 60.9

  • BSN-to-PhD

Rutgers awards more nursing PhDs than any other campus program here, more than double the next, and that scale is the point: a large cohort, a part-time option, and a post-bachelor's route that hands you an MSN on the way through.

Where it wins. The 129 doctorates conferred is the largest count on this list by a factor of two, which buys you committees that have run this process many times, a deep shelf of prior dissertations, and cohort-mates who are actually around when you need them.

What you give up. Research money is thin for the volume: three NINR awards totaling $591,131 places Rutgers in the bottom half of this list, and 66 credits at $1,082 each is roughly $71,000 in coursework tuition with no package attached.

Funding. The program discusses financing case by case, covering grants, scholarships and federal loans,. Funding is not guaranteed.

  • No GRE

Built for a nurse who cannot move. One flat tuition rate whatever state you live in, campus time measured in days per semester, and intensive dates published two cohorts ahead so you can book travel now.

Where it wins. The $630 credit hour applies to Alabama residents and out-of-state students identically, which deletes the residency arithmetic that shapes every other public program here. Sixty-two credits totals $39,060, cheaper per credit than three quarters of the programs on this list that publish a rate.

What you give up. The assistantship is a separate competitive application, and the roughly thirteen hours a week it buys are worked on site at the College of Nursing, so the funded version of this program is not the remote one. You need an MSN to enter.

Funding. College of Nursing graduate assistantships start each fall and are renewable annually on satisfactory performance; they carry paid tuition plus a monthly stipend in exchange for roughly 13.3 hours per week of instructional, laboratory, simulation and clinical teaching work based at the College of Nursing. They are applied for separately through a Qualtrics form (deadline May 1) and are competitive rather than automatic. Departmental nursing scholarships require the FAFSA plus the AUCON Departmental Graduate Scholarship Application by May 1.

One of the few programs on this list that publishes what happens to its graduates, and the number it publishes is the reason to take it seriously despite a modest research portfolio.

Where it wins. The school reports 84% of students holding a postdoc or faculty position at graduation, with two to five students per mentor. Only a handful of programs here publish an outcome figure of any kind, which turns that claim into something you can check rather than a promise.

What you give up. Four to five years sits at the long end of what programs here advertise, and tuition remission rides on landing an assistantship rather than on admission. Six NINR awards is a thin base to fund a cohort from.

Funding. 100% tuition remission with a graduate assistantship (not including segregated fees); most graduate assistantships cover tuition and provide a monthly stipend, and full-time PhD students receive priority for School of Nursing teaching and research assistantships, but funding is not guaranteed.

Hybrid means a weekly drive to Sacramento, not a laptop at home. What the commute buys is a nursing doctorate wired into a full research university, with combinations you cannot assemble at a standalone nursing school.

Where it wins. You can stack a designated emphasis in Feminist Theory or Computational Social Science onto the nursing PhD, or add a certificate in health professions education or family caregiving. A $3 million Moore Foundation gift underwrites lowering student cost across up to five years of full-time study.

What you give up. Full time only, BSN entry only, 12 units every quarter, Thursdays and Fridays in Sacramento. Support past the first year is written as possible rather than guaranteed, so ask the current cohort what years two through four actually paid.

Funding. 'PhD students admitted in fall 2024 receive support for University of California in-state tuition, fees, and a stipend for start-up expenses,' with additional stipends possible in years 2-4 pending funding; the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation gave $3 million to lower student costs, covering up to five years of full-time study.

Eligibility decides this one before anything else does. It is open to commissioned officer-nurses of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Public Health Service, with federal-agency nurses admitted space-available. If that is not you, the rest is academic.

Where it wins. You stay on service pay while you study, tuition is zero, and the plan of study runs three years start to finish. Research immersion happens at NIH and inside tri-service military programs, on questions like warfighter health optimization and operational readiness that no civilian school is set up to ask.

What you give up. It is one of only two programs on this list still requiring the GRE, its 69 credits land in the heaviest quarter of the field here, and finishing binds you to an obligated service commitment set by your sponsoring branch.

Funding. GSN Admissions FAQ: 'There are no tuition costs or fees for DoD employees. For non-DoD Federal employees please contact individual program directors for further details. All students incur some type of obligated service according to the requirements of their sponsoring organization.' Students attend as active-duty commissioned officers of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Public Health Service under service sponsorship (Army LTHET, Navy DUINS, Air Force AFIT) and remain on service pay; full-time federal-agency nurses are admitted on a space-available basis only if they have secured tuition support from their agency.

Research. Human performance and warfighter health optimization (health promotion, disease prevention, cardiovascular, military women's health), Operational readiness (health threats of novel weapons, readiness of military medical forces, novel therapeutic techniques, nutritional interventions), Precision health and omics, Veterans' health concerns, Military and federal health care systems, Bioethics, leadership and health policy research.

Roughly three in ten credits here are methods coursework and another quarter is elective, so this is a degree you assemble rather than receive. That suits a student who already knows the question and wants the tools to answer it.

Where it wins. Applications are read on a rolling basis into July, one of only six programs here that works that way, so deciding late in the cycle does not automatically cost you a year. Funded students hold half-time appointments on faculty research teams.

What you give up. The assistantship stipend runs nine months, so three months of each year are yours to cover, and half of your fees stay on your bill. Doctoral output is small: more than sixty programs here graduated more PhDs.

Funding. "Students admitted to the program may be eligible for tuition coverage and 9-month stipends"; funded students hold a 50% graduate assistantship covering tuition, half of fees and a monthly stipend, and internal grant funding is available for dissertation projects.

Research. symptom science, socio-economic factors that influence disease risk, new methods of patient support, accessibility to life saving medications.

Most PhD courses land on Thursday, which turns a doctorate into one protected day a week rather than a schedule that eats the job you still have. That single decision is what makes UNMC workable for a nurse on shift.

Where it wins. Classes run live rather than recorded, so joining from a distance puts you in the same synchronous room as the students sitting in Omaha, and stacking coursework onto one weekday means negotiating one day with your manager instead of a rebuilt roster.

What you give up. Live scheduling cuts both ways: the Thursday block is fixed, so rotating shifts collide with it every week, and three NINR awards worth $394,254 leave little existing funded work to attach a dissertation to.

Funding. Students may have the possibility of gaining research experience as a Research Assistant or teaching experience as a Graduate Assistant, along with receiving a stipend and tuition.

University of Massachusetts-Boston

Nursing PhD

Boston, MA · Public · scores 57.1

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

One track, health policy and population health, and the program commits to it completely. The narrowness pays off in throughput: 8 doctorates a year out of a 48-credit degree, more output than three quarters of the campus programs on this list.

Where it wins. Forty-eight credits at $877.50 comes to about $42,100 in tuition, and 50 of the 69 programs publishing a credit count require more coursework than that. The BS-to-PhD track also awards a non-clinical master's at 30 credits, so there's a credential on the way through.

What you give up. Your question has to fit health policy or population health, and there's no second track to move into. The research funding in the building is a single NINR award, so you're joining a policy department more than a lab with studies already running.

Research. population health, health policy.

Judge this one on graduates, not grants. It produces nursing PhDs at a rate that puts it in the top fifteen of this list while its research funding sits near the bottom of the programs holding any.

Where it wins. Ten doctorates conferred in a year, and required doctoral courses meet on a single weekday, so nurses commute rather than relocate. Three published plans of study, including a five-year part-time route, mean the schedule was designed rather than negotiated case by case.

What you give up. With two NINR awards in the building you will be constructing a study rather than joining one, and the money on offer is a college-wide scholarship pool you compete for, not a package attached to your admission.

Funding. Over $500,000 in nursing scholarships and funding awarded annually, plus loans, grants, student employment, fellowships and military education benefits. Funding is not guaranteed.

Morgan State University

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Baltimore, MD · Public · scores 56.9

A health services and policy doctorate that happens to sit inside a nursing department. If your question is about systems, access and delivery rather than bedside science, the methods training already points that way.

Where it wins. Five required courses are public health and biostatistics rather than nursing, so you finish trained in the methods health services research actually runs on. Forty-eight credits at $495 puts the tuition near $23,760, eighth-cheapest per credit here.

What you give up. It is one of only two programs on this list still requiring the GRE, so you sit an exam almost nobody else here asks for. Assistantships cap at three years of eligibility and demand 20 research hours a week.

Funding. Funding is competitive rather than guaranteed. School of Graduate Studies teaching and research assistantships and fellowships pay doctoral students a $21,000 stipend plus a tuition award of up to 9 credits per semester; RAs require a minimum of 20 research hours a week, all awards require unconditional admission, a 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment of at least 9 credits, doctoral students are eligible for a maximum of three years, and applications are due April 30 for fall and November 30 for spring.

Research. Health services research and policy, Health disparities and vulnerable populations, Health service delivery systems and quality of care, Nursing leadership and administration, Nursing education.

Georgetown University

PhD in Nursing

Washington, DC · Private nonprofit · scores 56.3

  • No GRE

A 2025 startup betting on ethics, policy and a Washington address rather than a track record. If your research question is normative rather than biological, the required curriculum is built for you in a way few nursing PhDs are.

Where it wins. The ethics specialization is required coursework instead of an elective add-on, running as a Health Care Ethics Scholar sequence plus a zero-credit Health Justice Scholars Track. Coursework sits in the bottom quarter of this list by volume, leaving more of the four years for the dissertation.

What you give up. Nobody has finished this program yet, so there is no completion record and no alumni bench to inherit. It's full-time only, master's entry only, and the funded research base runs three awards deep.

Funding. The Patrick Healy Graduate Fellowship, a merit-based program that supports students who may not otherwise be able to pursue a PhD, funded a member of the inaugural cohort. Funding is competitive rather than automatic.

Research. ethics, health equity, health disparities, mental health, women's health, cardiovascular science and physiology.

Minneapolis, MN · Public · scores 56.0

Choosing per course whether to sit in the room or join by video is rarer than it sounds, and it is what makes this survivable for a nurse who cannot quit. The price tag is the counterweight.

Where it wins. Format is decided course by course rather than locked for the whole degree, so a busy semester does not force you out. Twice-yearly four-day immersions keep a real cohort in place, and there is a dedicated doctoral pathway for American Indian and Alaska Native nurses.

What you give up. At $1,827 per credit this is the seventh most expensive of the 59 programs here that publish a rate, and support is framed as eligibility tied to a full-time plan. The school conferred 119 DNPs against 5 PhDs.

Funding. 'All admitted PhD in Nursing students are eligible for financial assistance, contingent on their following the relevant full-time program plan. Financial assistance may be provided through a 25% graduate research assistantship (RA) and/or School of Nursing Scholarships.'

Research. Health Promotion among Vulnerable Populations, Prevention and Management of Chronic Health Conditions, Symptom Management, Health/Nursing Informatics and Systems Improvement.

Everything about the design assumes you have a job. Doctoral classes are compressed into Friday mornings and afternoons, taught live to on-campus and distance students in the same room, with DNP holders getting advanced standing for prior doctoral work.

Where it wins. It graduates 9 nursing PhDs a year, inside the top fifteen of the 92 programs here for completions, while running one class day a week. The palliative care, end-of-life and caregiving cluster is unusually specific for a program this size.

What you give up. The research base is small: $409,000 of NINR across two awards, near the bottom of the funded programs here, so expect to build your own study. With no guaranteed package at $1,450 a credit, the BSN track runs about $91,000 in tuition.

Funding. The school offers scholarship and graduate research assistantship opportunities to eligible graduate students'. Funding is not guaranteed.

Take a job in the health system first and the arithmetic changes completely: employees get ninety percent of tuition reimbursed, which turns a degree already priced in the cheapest fifth of this list into something close to pocket change.

Where it wins. Monthly class days and a full sticker near $31,500 make this one of the few research doctorates a staff nurse can pay for out of income. Three entry points mean a BSN, an MSN or a post-master's applicant all have a route in.

What you give up. No NINR-funded science sits inside this college, so your dissertation gets built from local clinical partnerships rather than bolted onto a study already running. Ask which faculty currently hold external grants before you commit.

Funding. UAMS employees receive 90% tuition reimbursement; faculty research assistantships, Graduate Assistant positions and student stipends are offered annually, along with College of Nursing scholarships. Tuition runs roughly $5,000 per semester for Arkansas residents and about $9,000 for non-residents.

You are buying access to Boston's research density rather than the school's own grant book. That is a fair trade if you already hold a Massachusetts license and know which investigators you want to work beside.

Where it wins. The six-credit research practicum places you with active Boston-area investigators rather than in-house, and at 48 credits the coursework is among the twenty lightest on this list. Applications stay open to June 1, months after most programs here have closed.

What you give up. A Massachusetts RN license is required by matriculation, which rules out anyone not already licensed in the state. Assistantships are competitive and awarded a year at a time, and three doctorates against 32 DNPs shows where the school's attention sits.

Funding. "A select number of competitive Graduate Assistantships are available for doctoral students. Graduate Assistantships cover tuition and include a stipend in exchange for working 20 hours/week as a research or teaching assistant," awarded each academic year rather than guaranteed for the full program.

Goldfarb School of Nursing

PhD: Nursing Science

Saint Louis, MO · Private nonprofit · scores 55.4

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

The degree is conferred jointly with WashU Medicine and you name mentors on either side in your admission essay, so a small nursing college hands you access to a major medical research university's faculty bench.

Where it wins. Five terms of mentored research plus a mentored teaching term are built into the 62 credits, so the apprenticeship is scheduled rather than improvised, and the mentor pool runs from omics-driven symptom science through obstetric equity.

What you give up. Tuition at $920 a credit is exactly the median rate on this list, and 62 credits works out near $57,000, while the part-time route stretches across 15 to 18 terms, which is five to six years of paying it.

Funding. Graduate tuition is $920 per credit hour plus $100-$380 in fees per term and notes 'competitive funds available to support scholarly dissemination.' The college's 2018 launch announcement stated that each PhD student would be offered full tuition, a monthly stipend, healthcare benefits and conference-related travel funds; the November 2025 part-time launch announcement says part-time students receive reduced WashU tuition and are eligible for BJC tuition reimbursement, though not the BJC 20% employee tuition discount, with scholarships also available.

Research. Symptom science and precision health care (omics and big data), Dissemination and implementation science, Outcomes and clinical research design, Psychometrics and biobehavioral measurement, Genomics or informatics minor/cognate, Palliative and end-of-life care.

The research budget belongs to a program ranked well above this one, and the format belongs to a working nurse. $5.73 million of NINR, more than 64 of these 92 campus programs hold, attached to monthly weekends on campus.

Where it wins. Tuition is covered for the first 36 credit hours of coursework, which at $572.25 a credit takes roughly $20,600 off the bill before any scholarship. Only 10 of the 59 programs posting a rate charge less per credit, and 12 active NINR awards sit behind the faculty.

What you give up. One PhD conferred a year against 26 DNPs, so the doctoral center of gravity is practice. Monthly campus weekends look small on a calendar and accumulate across the length of the program, especially if you're flying in for them.

Funding. Full tuition funding for the first 36 credit hours of pre-dissertation coursework, plus scholarships and assistantships; no stipend guarantee stated.

The most bendable delivery model on this list. You choose in-person or fully online at admission and can switch that choice each semester, landing in the same live classroom either way.

Where it wins. Remote students join the same synchronous session as the in-person cohort instead of a parallel online track, and the mode is a semester-by-semester decision rather than a lane you are locked into. Six named research areas, harm reduction and occupational health among them.

What you give up. The college awarded 36 DNPs against a single PhD in the reported year, so the research cohort around you is very small. At $806 a credit, 52 credits runs $41,912 if you are paying it yourself.

Coursework runs online; one year of your life does not. That's the bargain, and it's a reasonable one if you can concentrate the disruption into twelve months instead of spreading it thinly across four years.

Where it wins. Nursing doctoral courses run online in synchronous or asynchronous form, and the federal money that is here arrives as three awards averaging around $650,000 apiece, larger individual projects than most programs this size run. You get concentrated studies rather than scattered small ones.

What you give up. One PhD graduate a year means almost nobody ahead of you and a thin alumni bench. Assistantships are competitive, and the completion allowance stretches to fourteen semesters, roughly double the finish the program advertises.

Funding. "Students accepted into the PhD in Nursing Science Program may be offered graduate assistantships that will pay a stipend in exchange for working 20 hours per week as a research assistant or a teaching assistant", competitive, not guaranteed.

Refreshingly honest about what it is: a methods-heavy research doctorate for working nurse educators whose employers help with tuition. Nobody here is pretending a stipend is on the way.

Where it wins. The core is unusually heavy on method, with two advanced statistics courses plus advanced qualitative, advanced quantitative and a dedicated data science course. Classes run live online, so the only travel is Doctoral Days once an academic year and you never relocate.

What you give up. The college states outright that it offers no graduate assistantships, and the post-baccalaureate track is 90 credits, among the five longest on this page. You arrive with your own question and your own funding.

Funding. Explicitly not a funded program. The college states that 'As the majority of students in this program work full- or part-time as practicing nurses or nurse educators and have some or all of their tuition costs covered by their employer, we do not offer graduate assistantships.' Instead of stipends or tuition waivers the program points students toward employer tuition benefits and toward federal loan forgiveness programs for nurse educators.

Research. Self-management across the lifespan, Social and cultural health disparities, Health systems, leadership and quality, Serious illness and end of life, Mental health and trauma, Nursing education and transition to practice.

Forty programs on this list call themselves hybrid, and the word covers very different demands. Here it means two online evening blocks a week and two in-person days a semester, which is genuinely compatible with a clinical job.

Where it wins. The research identity is narrow enough to be useful: social context, stress and epigenetic determinants of health, a combination that hands you a bench-plus-population question rather than a general nursing one. Its $2 million of NINR spreads across 10 awards, so several faculty hold their own money.

What you give up. The published window is six years from an MSN and eight from a BSN, the far end of what programs here publish, and at $1,240 a credit the 70-credit BSN route is roughly $87,000 before any assistantship reduces it.

Funding. Graduate nursing tuition is $1,240 per credit hour; Loyola Graduate School assistantship awards typically include a stipend, a tuition scholarship and health insurance.

Built around the clock rather than the cohort. Three entry points, an eight-year ceiling for part-time students, and a single admission cycle each year add up to a program that expects you to keep working.

Where it wins. The part-time clock runs a full eight years and the full-time clock seven, which is unusually generous room for a nurse who cannot stop earning. Nine doctorates conferred in a year puts output in the top fifth of this list, so people do finish inside it.

What you give up. No funded package is on the table, and 66 credits at the posted rate comes to roughly $71,000 in tuition alone. With no NINR-backed studies in the school, the research you attach to will be someone's unfunded work.

Funding. The program discusses financing case by case, covering grants, scholarships and federal loans,. Funding is not guaranteed.

The whole design points at one person: a working nurse who wants to teach. Coursework reaches you at a distance, dissertation research can happen near your job, and the loan program forgives most of the balance for four years of faculty work.

Where it wins. Only four programs on this list charge less per credit, and that rate combines with a curriculum you attend from home except for two summer research workshops. If you already hold a DNP, some of that prior doctoral coursework can count.

What you give up. A three-year finish assumes you can move at full speed, and this program recruits people who are working, so plan on longer. Faculty here hold no NINR awards, which removes the funded-study shortcut into a dissertation topic.

Funding. Graduate research assistantships; the University System of Georgia Tuition Assistance Program for USG employees; and the HRSA-funded AU Nurse Faculty Loan Program, which forgives up to 85% of the loan for four consecutive years of full-time nursing faculty service.

Research. cardiovascular health, community-based participatory interventions, health promotion.

A master's-prepared nurse in the DC area with a job and a late-summer change of heart has few other options. Mason still takes the application on July 1, and its seminars meet live rather than as recorded video.

Where it wins. Electives can be taken across the Washington Metropolitan Area Consortium, so your methods training is not capped by one nursing faculty. The July 1 close is one of roughly a dozen summer deadlines here, against 28 programs that shut in November or December.

What you give up. 78 credits sits in the heaviest sixth of this list even though admission already requires an MSN, and at the posted rate that is about $52,000 in tuition unless one of the limited assistantships lands.

Funding. A limited number of Graduate Research Assistantships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships are allocated to full-time Nursing PhD students for two academic years, renewable up to four; awards include a full tuition waiver and an annual stipend.

Built for one person: a DNP holder who wants the research doctorate and a faculty post without sitting through coursework already finished once. Seventeen credits come off the top, leaving 43 to complete.

Where it wins. Two years part-time is the fastest published completion of any campus program on this list, and the 43 remaining credits at $650 each plus the $20 per-credit online fee land near $28,800. Two campus visits a year is the entire residency.

What you give up. The research training points at nursing education, curriculum design, and program evaluation rather than clinical science, so this is the wrong doctorate if you intend to run funded biomedical or health services studies.

Funding. No assistantships or funding package advertised; nursing doctoral tuition is charged per credit hour - $650 for 2026-2027 and $640 for 2025-2026 - plus a $20 per-hour online course fee.

Output is the surprise. Seven doctorates a year puts this in the top quarter of the 92 campus programs, from a school sitting in the lower half of the ranking. Admission then runs rolling after December 1, depending on whether a placement is open.

Where it wins. Applications are considered year-round once the December 1 priority date passes, so missing one gate doesn't cost you twelve months. Seven doctorates conferred a year beats two thirds of the campus programs here, and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program is listed for anyone headed into faculty work.

What you give up. Post-baccalaureate students take 22 credits beyond the 57-credit core, 79 in total, which lands among the ten heaviest loads on this page. Funding gets assembled award by award rather than promised at admission.

Funding. 'Acceptance into the PhD Program does not guarantee full funding support. However, we strive to match new PhD students with any available funding support whenever possible.' Graduate assistantships, the Nurse Faculty Loan Program and REAL Fellowships are the listed sources.

A faculty-pipeline doctorate that is honest about being one. Every research area listed concerns teaching, administration or program quality, and the timeline sits in the fastest tier on this list.

Where it wins. The dissertation runs through four sequenced courses with a committee assigned, rather than sitting as an open-ended obligation after coursework ends. That structure is why a two-to-three-year finish is credible; only one program on this list moves faster.

What you give up. You pay for this one. $650 a credit plus a $20 per-hour online fee makes 60 credits $40,200, the fee alone adding $1,200. An MSN is required and the research menu stops at education and administration.

Funding. No assistantships or funding package advertised; nursing doctoral tuition is charged per credit hour - $650 for 2026-2027 and $640 for 2025-2026 - plus a $20 per-hour online course fee.

Win a fellowship here and your funding is structured better than packages twice its size elsewhere. Everything else about the program is conventional, so the decision really turns on whether you can land one.

Where it wins. The Jorgensen and Harriott fellowships pay a $20,000 stipend for five years and attach no service obligation. Most funded offers on this list run three or four years and buy back ten to twenty hours of your week, so five protected years is worth more than the stipend figure suggests.

What you give up. Twenty thousand a year in Connecticut is thin, and both fellowships are competitive rather than standard issue. With no NINR-funded studies running in the school, the dissertation is yours to design and pay for.

Funding. Doctoral applicants may compete for the Jorgensen Fellowship and the Harriott Fellowship, each "a service-free fellowship providing a $20,000 annual stipend for five years"; the Nurse Faculty Loan Program offers up to 85% loan cancellation over four years of full-time faculty service.

A nursing PhD conferred by a biomedical sciences graduate school, which puts you in a cohort of bench and clinical scientists rather than nurses only. Long credit count, one intake a year, part-time tolerated.

Where it wins. Because the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences awards the degree, your committee, coursework and peer group reach past the nursing school into the wider health science center. Six PhDs conferred puts output in the top third of the 92 programs on this page.

What you give up. Eighty-one credits is the ninth-longest requirement here and the published span runs three to six years, so a part-time route stretches a long way. One admission cycle a year, reviewed after April 1, means a miss costs you twelve months.

Ignore the sticker and read the funding line twice. The published rate of $2,763 a credit would make 60 credits $165,780, the largest computed tuition figure on this list, and the program waives all of it.

Where it wins. Funding runs up to five years against a four-year plan of study, so the money outlasts the degree instead of expiring during it, and the stipends are twelve-month, meaning summers are paid rather than survived. That shape is rare among the funded programs here.

What you give up. Lock-step means you clear every semester's courses or you do not advance, ten semesters straight. The funding is tied to a research or teaching assistantship, and there is no part-time seat, so this only works if you can stop working entirely.

Funding. 'PhD student tuition and 12-month stipends are fully funded for up to five years', delivered through a research or teaching assistantship, a full tuition waiver and student health insurance.

The reason to pay this much is the clinical credential riding alongside the doctorate. It is the only program on this list that pairs adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist preparation with the research PhD, and a BSN entrant can take that route.

Where it wins. Coursework runs 48 credits, lighter than seven in ten programs here, and campus attendance is a single day a week, so a nurse executive or a serving officer can hold the schedule without moving house or leaving the payroll.

What you give up. At the median rate on this list those same 48 credits would run near $44,000; here they run past $93,000, and no institutional package offsets it. You are buying flexibility and a clinical credential with your own money.

Funding. No guaranteed package; students may be eligible for federal aid, scholarships, research funding and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, with an April 1 FAFSA priority deadline.

The immersion model is the whole proposition: one week on campus at the start of each fall and spring, synchronous class the rest of the term. It counts as a campus PhD without asking you to move to Phoenix.

Where it wins. It takes applicants from outside nursing entirely, which nothing else on this list is recorded doing, and pairs that with a concurrent DNP-PhD route. A statistics, engineering or health services background becomes an entry point instead of an obstacle.

What you give up. Full time at nine credits a semester through years one and two, and 84 credits total, puts this among the ten heaviest loads here. Funding is an optional essay for one assistantship program, not a package.

Funding. Applicants may submit an optional additional essay to be considered for a Presidential Graduate Assistantship (PGA); no guaranteed tuition-and-stipend package is described on the program or application pages.

The only HBCU among these 92 programs, running a nursing PhD since 2000 around health disparities and public policy for underserved populations. If that is your question, the faculty here have been working it for a quarter century.

Where it wins. Two admission cycles a year, fall and spring, is unusual for a research doctorate and means you are never more than six months from a start date, and the three-year published completion sits in the fastest quarter of this list.

What you give up. Admission requires a current Louisiana RN license and an in-person interview, so relocating is part of applying rather than something you sort out after acceptance, and you need a master's already in hand to start.

Funding runs four years and normative time to degree is four years, which is the alignment most funded offers quietly miss. Add a guaranteed housing offer in Orange County and the package, not the research profile, is the reason to look here.

Where it wins. One of 19 fully funded programs on this list, and the guarantee covers all four years of the normative clock plus a TA or RA post from day one. Letters of recommendation aren't part of the application either; admission turns on your statement, writing samples, and an interview.

What you give up. Full time only, no part-time option, and about two doctorates conferred a year. The cohort is tiny and the alumni network behind it is thin, which starts to matter when you go looking for a faculty job.

Funding. 'Guaranteed funding for the first four years of the program' through fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, campus scholarships and grant awards, plus a guaranteed housing offer; students hold a TA or RA position from day one.

Admission opens every other year, so this is a program you plan for rather than apply to. The research agenda is anchored to Hawai'i and Pacific Basin populations, which makes fit a yes-or-no question instead of a maybe.

Where it wins. NEXus lets you take doctoral coursework at other member programs at a shared tuition price, so your methods options are not capped by one faculty roster. At 43 credits the curriculum is the third-shortest on this list.

What you give up. Missing one cycle costs you two years, not one, and the program expects a dissertation you can finish in twelve months, so the calendar scopes the question rather than the reverse. At $1,001 a credit, 43 credits is $43,043.

Priced and scheduled for the nurse who already holds a master's or a DNP, wants the faculty credential, and plans to keep working through it. Nobody here is going to pay you to be a student.

Where it wins. The DNP-to-PhD pathway transfers up to fifteen units, which at the published rate takes roughly $17,400 off the bill and cuts remaining coursework to forty units. It's also the only program among these 92 that names nursing historical research as a faculty focus area.

What you give up. Money moves the wrong direction: loan forgiveness after four years of teaching and a $2,000 lifetime alumni discount, with no stipend attached. You need a master's to apply, and the 3.5 GPA floor is higher than most programs here set.

Funding. Nurse Faculty Loan Program (up to 85% forgiveness over four years of full-time nursing school teaching) and a School of Nursing alumni tuition discount of $500 per term, up to $2,000 over the program. No tuition-plus-stipend package is offered.

A small private program that puts professional support behind you instead of money. Whether that trade works depends on how much you value a statistician you do not have to go hunting for.

Where it wins. Doctoral students get a designated librarian, statistician and editor at no extra charge, which is help most programs expect you to find alone. The DNP-to-PhD bridge accepts up to 21 transferred credits against a 30-credit Molloy minimum, and classes meet Thursday evenings live.

What you give up. At $1,780 per credit, eighth-highest of the 59 rates on this page, the 51-credit degree lists near $90,780, while the assistantship offers a 3-credit voucher and $500 a semester. That gap is yours to close.

Rural health is the axis, and only three programs across this ranking name it as a focus area. If your question sits outside metropolitan systems, the field narrows to a handful and this is in it.

Where it wins. Classes meet on Fridays, part-time enrollment is allowed, and anyone without teaching experience completes a teaching practicum, so you finish with the classroom credential rural nursing schools hire on. At 46 credits, only seven programs here ask for less coursework.

What you give up. Assistantships are competitive rather than attached to admission, and they cost 16 to 20 hours a week of service on top of coursework. Friday classes fit a working week; the dissertation still will not.

Funding. Teaching and graduate assistantships require 16-20 hours of service per week and provide a tuition scholarship and stipend; traineeships and fellowships also carry a tuition scholarship and stipend. These are competitive and not guaranteed to admitted students.

You cannot graduate without a first-authored paper in a peer-reviewed journal, one of a small number of programs here that writes publication into the degree itself. You leave with a publication record instead of a promise to build one.

Where it wins. One class day a week in Jackson and a per-credit rate in the cheapest quarter of this list means a Mississippi nurse can do this without quitting or relocating. Classes are kept deliberately small, so the publication requirement gets faculty attention.

What you give up. Published completion runs four to five years, longer than four in five programs on this list, and the publication requirement sits on top of the dissertation. Budget the extra year rather than hoping to beat the range.

The value here is arithmetic. Purdue charges the lowest per-credit rate on this list, and even carrying the third-heaviest credit load, total tuition lands well under what a typical program on this page costs.

Where it wins. 90 credits at $347.85 works out to about $31,300. Apply the list's median per-credit rate to its median credit load and you get roughly $55,200, so the heaviest kind of curriculum costs a little over half of a typical one.

What you give up. Two doctorates conferred in a year and three NINR awards add up to a small research operation, and support is offered based on available funds rather than promised. Bring your own funding plan.

Where it wins. TCU already confers 94 practice doctorates, so the faculty and clinical infrastructure the bridge sits on are established even though the PhD cohort itself started in 2025, and Nurse Faculty Loan Program eligibility is pointed at exactly the graduates it recruits.

What you give up. At $2,315 a credit this is among the four priciest of the 59 campus programs that publish a rate, there is no stipend package behind it, and four consecutive full-time semesters on campus is a hard ask for a working DNP.

Funding. Students are eligible to participate in the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP); no tuition-plus-stipend package is described.

You can't apply until a faculty member has agreed to chair your dissertation, which settles in advance the mentor match that derails PhD students in year two. Hardest application on this page to assemble, and the least ambiguous once you're in.

Where it wins. The pre-arranged mentor requirement means your research question gets vetted by the person who will supervise it before you pay a dollar of tuition. At 45 credits, only six of the 69 programs publishing a count are shorter, so the coursework block is compact.

What you give up. A 3.5 GPA floor is the highest on this page, matched by only nine other programs. The college also confers 86 DNPs against 2 PhDs, so the faculty, the partnerships, and the schedule are all built around practice.

Every class meets on Tuesday and every class is wired for live remote participation. That single scheduling decision is the whole design, and it aims squarely at nurses who intend to keep their jobs.

Where it wins. Candidacy requires submitting an article to a peer-reviewed journal, so you reach the dissertation with a real submission behind you rather than a plan to publish. Three classes a semester are online outright, and the campus ones can be joined live.

What you give up. The published finish is four to five years, the longest tier here, against a limited number of competitive assistantships. Fifty-two post-MS credits at $703.58 comes to $36,586 you are likely funding from the job you kept, and the GPA floor is 3.3.

Funding. 'A limited number of assistantships are available on a competitive basis'; the Dean's PhD & DNP Students' Research Support Stipend provides limited stipends for dissertation-phase research expenses.

  • BSN-to-PhD

You will not pay less for a research doctorate anywhere on this list. You will also be a very small minority inside a college that runs almost entirely on practice doctorates, and both halves of that should shape your decision.

Where it wins. Entry after a DNP takes 52 credits, which at $347.91 apiece comes to about $18,100 in tuition for a research doctorate, off the second-lowest per-credit rate among the 92 campus programs here. A thirteen-credit education certificate stacks on top for CNE exam eligibility.

What you give up. The college awards 87 practice doctorates for every research PhD, so you are a rounding error in the building. Apply at the July date and you have already missed the December priority window for university money.

Funding. Priority admission and financial support go to applicants meeting the December 15 priority deadline; in 2024-2025 the College of Nursing awarded over 380 foundation scholarships distributing $730,000 in private funding.

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

The cheapest serious route to a nursing research doctorate on this page, plus a rare choice in how you write the dissertation. What you save in tuition you will need, because the program does not fund you.

Where it wins. Sixty credits at $583 comes to roughly $34,980 for the entire doctorate, about $20,000 below what the median rate on this page would charge for the same credits. DNP holders transfer up to 15 credits, cutting it to 54 and near $31,500.

What you give up. Funding is described as limited and handled by contacting the program director, so plan on paying. The final 30 credit hours including dissertation must be earned at Memphis, which makes a move mid-degree expensive.

Funding. The program refers only to 'limited program funding options' and directs applicants to contact the PhD program director; full-time students with graduate assistantships must enroll for 9 credit hours each semester.

UPR Medical Sciences

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) / Doctorado en Filosofia en Enfermeria

San Juan, PR · Public · scores 44.1

  • No GRE

The only Spanish-language nursing doctorate in this ranking, and the admissions math is the real story. A scholarly writing sample counts for 30 percent of the score, three times either GPA figure on its own.

Where it wins. Admission runs on a published 100-point formula with no standardized test in it: writing sample 30 percent, essay 25, interview 25, the two GPAs 10 each. Tuition is flat at $8,000 a year rather than per-credit, so a heavy term costs no more than a light one.

What you give up. Coursework is in Spanish, so fluency is a prerequisite rather than a bonus, and the completion window runs four to eight years. It also takes master's-prepared applicants only, one of 21 programs here closed to BSN entrants.

Funding. No guaranteed funding package. Doctoral tuition is a flat annual rate of $8,000.00 ('costo anual') rather than per-credit. Support is applied for through the Decanato de Estudiantes aid program (becas, prestamos bancarios, ayudas institucionales, Estudio y Trabajo), the Programa de Ayudantias Graduadas for teaching or research assistantships (requires a 3.00 GPA or higher), and the Rosa Echegaray / Sixto Moreira endowment scholarship, which funds 111 awards of $1,000 across undergraduate and graduate nursing students system-wide.

Bowie State University

Ph.D. in Nursing Education

Bowie, MD · Public · scores 43.1

  • Hybrid

This is a PhD in nursing education rather than nursing science, and the distinction decides whether it fits. Your dissertation will be about how nurses are taught, and the degree aims you at a faculty post, not a lab.

Where it wins. More than a third of the 60 credits are dissertation hours, so writing time is scheduled rather than squeezed in after coursework ends. The full sticker sits near $28,500, among the cheapest handful of research doctorates on this list.

What you give up. The first cohort starts in fall 2026, which means no graduates, no completion record and no alumni to call. You will be the evidence the program uses to recruit the cohort behind you.

Funding. There is no stipend or assistantship package. Enrolled students automatically receive a list of scholarships they qualify for based on the GPA and test scores on their admission application, and encourages applying for private donor, departmental and external partner scholarships. In June 2026 the university received more than $2.3 million in competitive state grants to expand nursing education capacity, faculty development and nursing education research.

Research. Nursing education and instructional innovation, Clinical nursing studies, Nursing leadership and academic leadership, Health equity and social determinants of health, Evidence-based teaching strategies and learning outcome assessment.

The DNP-to-PhD lane is the reason to look. Thirty-one credits beyond a practice doctorate is fewer than the lightest full curriculum on this list requires, and at the posted rate that prices out near $23,000.

Where it wins. Three entry points carry genuinely different credit loads rather than the same curriculum relabeled: 55 beyond a BSN, 40 beyond an MSN, 31 beyond a DNP. If you already hold a practice doctorate, that work is honored instead of retaught.

What you give up. Assistantships are closed to part-time students, so the flexible route and the funded route never overlap. The residency rule forces at least one full-time year regardless, which is exactly the year your nursing income has to stop.

Funding. Graduate Student Assistantships are available, but part-time students cannot hold one.

  • BSN-to-PhD

The reason to pick Penn State is the dual title. You can finish with a PhD in nursing and clinical and translational sciences, or in nursing and bioethics, and that second field changes what you are qualified to apply for.

Where it wins. Forty-three post-master's credits is one of the five lightest coursework loads among the 69 campus programs that publish a count, and funding is written as up to five years for selected BSN-to-PhD students, scoped to the whole degree rather than the classroom phase alone.

What you give up. NINR support runs to two awards and $74,976, the smallest total of any program on this list holding any at all, so the funded study you join is more likely one a faculty member is still writing than one already running.

Funding. "Select BSN to PhD are provided with up to five years of funding. Select MSN to PhD are provided with up to four years of funding. Continued funding is contingent upon such things as availability, grades, and assistantship evaluations."

Five separate plans of study, including two part-time routes and a DNP-to-PhD path, plus an August 1 deadline for fall entry. This is the program for people who decided late, or who already hold a practice doctorate and want the credits to count.

Where it wins. Up to 32 Wayne State or 30 outside DNP credits transfer in, and at $1,181.47 a credit that's roughly $37,800 off the bill for anyone arriving with a practice doctorate. The August 1 deadline also lets you apply the same summer you decide to go.

What you give up. The full BSN-to-PhD route is 79 credits at $1,181.47, about $93,300 in tuition before aid, on a five-year timeline only four other programs here match. One PhD a year against 61 DNPs tells you where the college's weight sits.

Funding. Graduate teaching assistant positions, Graduate School scholarships, College of Nursing grants, Graduate Professional Scholarship, Rumble Fellowships, ANEW Grant and Impact Grant are listed. Funding is not guaranteed.

Read this as a faculty deal rather than a research-stipend deal. Loan forgiveness is the mechanism that makes the price work, and it asks for four years of teaching on the other side.

Where it wins. Doctoral coursework is shared with Jefferson's population health and public health programs, so your seminar table is not all nurses, and a dual PhD/MPH is on the menu. All five research areas sit under health equity and outcomes.

What you give up. At $1,390 a credit, 47 credits comes to $65,330, near the top of this list. The Nurse Faculty Loan Program forgives up to 85% of that, but only at three to six credits a term, which is the five-year part-time plan.

Funding. The program states that funding is available. Funding is not guaranteed. The College of Nursing lists the HRSA Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) as open to matriculated PhD students taking 3-6 credits per term, forgiving up to 85% of the loan in exchange for four years of service as nursing faculty (application and FAFSA deadline August 15).

Rare structure: the doctorate contains a master's, so a nurse practitioner or nurse educator credential comes attached to the research degree. That saves you an entire application cycle and costs you calendar time.

Where it wins. The BSN-to-PhD track packs a full MSN, nurse practitioner or nursing education, into 94 to 97 credits. That is more coursework than any single requirement on this list, and the reason is plain arithmetic: you are finishing two degrees under one admission.

What you give up. Full-time study is required and four and a half to five years sits at the long end here, so it's five years off a nursing salary. Doctoral output runs about forty practice degrees for every PhD, which tells you where faculty attention goes.

A nursing PhD inside a medical school that takes an explicit philosophical position, which shapes how you get taught to think rather than just what you study. One Tuesday a week in Worcester, and you fund yourself.

Where it wins. The curriculum is built on Bernard Lonergan's cognitional theory, so epistemology is taught rather than assumed, and comprehensives can be cleared by submitting manuscripts instead of sitting an exam. Core coursework compresses into Tuesdays in Worcester across two years.

What you give up. The money on offer is Nurse Faculty Loan Program debt, forgiven only if you teach full time for four years afterward, plus teaching assistantships that vary year to year. You commit to a faculty career before you start.

Aid here is designed around part-time study rather than merely tolerating it. A dedicated PhD scholarship covers in-state tuition for up to five years of part-time enrollment capped at 17 credits a year, which almost nobody writes down.

Where it wins. At $457 a credit, the 61-credit master's-entry route prices out near $27,900, one of the five lowest computable tuition totals on this list. Stack the Nurse Faculty Loan Program on top, which forgives 85 percent for four years of full-time teaching, and the degree can end close to free.

What you give up. The loan forgiveness binds you to four years of full-time nursing faculty work, which is a career decision made at enrollment rather than at graduation. The BSN pathway also stretches to 83 credits across five to seven years.

Funding. Nurse Faculty Loan Program covers in-state or out-of-state tuition and fees including the Excellence Fee for up to five years, with 85% forgiven for four years of full-time US nursing faculty service; a separate PhD in Nursing Scholarship covers in-state tuition and fees for up to five years of part-time study capped at 17 credits a year.

Which On-Campus PhD in Nursing Programs Are Best for What

The ranked list weighs everything at once. These answer the question people actually arrive with.

Best for Working in a Funded Research Group

University of Pennsylvania holds $41.9M in National Institute of Nursing Research awards across the last five fiscal years, and 64 nursing research doctorates come out of it a year.

University of Pennsylvania's Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Best for Finishing Without Paying Tuition

UW Seattle funds its doctoral students: All full-time PhD students receive a three-year funding package, including tuition and a stipend.

UW Seattle's Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD)

Best for Finishing Fastest

William Carey University puts its PhD at 2 years, against a median of four across every campus program here.

William Carey University's Nursing Education (DNP to PhD)

Best for Going Straight From a BSN

Columbia admits BSN-prepared nurses directly into the PhD, so you skip the master's and the years it costs.

Columbia's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Best for Keeping Your Nursing Job

New York University takes part-time doctoral students, which most campus PhD programs do not.

New York University's Florence S. Downs PhD Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development

Best Public University Option

University of California-Los Angeles is a public university, and it scores 81.9 out of 100 on the model behind this list.

University of California-Los Angeles's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Best for Joining a Large Doctoral Cohort

Rutgers New Brunswick confers 129 nursing research doctorates a year, putting it in the top band for doctoral output.

Rutgers New Brunswick's PhD in Nursing

Best Program That Skips the GRE

Duke University does not require the GRE for doctoral admission.

Duke University's PhD Program in Nursing

What an On-Campus PhD in Nursing Pays Afterwards

Postsecondary nursing instructors, where most of these graduates end up, earn a median of $80,250. The bottom 10% earn $48,800 and the top 10% clear $129,500, across 77,960 jobs.

Staff registered nurses earn $97,550. So on median, moving from the bedside into faculty work costs about $17,300 a year, on top of the four or five years you spent not earning a full salary. A funded place removes the tuition from that arithmetic but not the forgone pay.

The routes that pay more sit outside teaching. Medical scientists earn a $103,410 median with a top decile at $177,780, and faculty pay climbs steeply with rank and grant funding. The full comparison across every route is here.
