Nursing PhD programs for nurses with a master's degree
Best MSN to PhD in Nursing Programs, Ranked (2026)
If you already hold a master's degree in nursing, you are the largest group of nursing PhD applicants, and most programs here admit you. Your clinical depth and your graduate coursework are the starting point, so what matters is credits, schedule and funding.

What an MSN Gives You at a Nursing PhD Program
Programs that admit master's-prepared nurses usually ask for fewer credits than they ask of a BSN entrant, because your graduate nursing coursework is already behind you. The saving is real but it varies, so compare the credit totals on each program rather than assuming a standard cut.
You also bring something a BSN applicant does not: years in a specialty. Nurse practitioners, educators and nurse leaders tend to arrive with a research question already in hand, which is what admission committees look for.
The Nurse Practitioner Question
A nurse practitioner who wants a PhD is choosing research over practice, at least for a while. Neither doctorate adds prescriptive authority on its own, since advanced practice licensure rests on your master's or post-master's preparation and your certification.
If your goal is leadership of clinical practice instead, the DNP may fit better, and the PhD versus DNP guide lays out the difference. If you hold a DNP already, look at the DNP to PhD list.
How This List Was Made
Every program that lists an MSN-to-PhD entry point qualifies, and the cards below are the highest-scoring ones. The score is the same research, funding, output, structure, time and access model used across this site, so the order reflects that model and not a view on which school suits you.
The notes on each card are written for a master's-prepared nurse, so they speak to your credits, your schedule and what you give up by leaving a clinical or faculty job.
Keeping Your Job While You Earn the PhD
Many programs here let you study part-time, and a good share are online. Two details decide how workable that is: campus visits and funding. A yearly intensive week is easy to plan around, while a weekly class day is harder, and a stipend usually means full-time enrollment.
Weigh those against your pay. Leaving a nurse practitioner salary for a stipend is a large trade, and the paying for a nursing PhD guide shows what that looks like.
Programs That Admit MSN Holders but Not BSN Graduates
These programs accept nurses who already hold a master's degree and do not list a direct path from a bachelor's degree. If your master's is finished, they are written for you. 29 of the 115 qualifying programs fit.

If your master's gave you the clinical depth and you now want to ask research questions full time, Penn's seat is a research apprenticeship with no clinical component.
Where it wins. Full-time students are supported for four years with tuition, fees, a living stipend, and health insurance, so leaving an NP or leadership salary has a funded landing.
What you give up. Only about six to twelve applicants are accepted each year, and part-time students pay their own way.
Funding. Penn Nursing commits to assisting all full-time PhD students for four years of tuition, fees, living stipend, and health insurance, funded internally or externally; part-time students pay their own tuition, fees and health insurance.

UCLA publishes an APRN to PhD course sequence of its own, so a nurse practitioner sees the route mapped out instead of squeezed into a BSN plan.
Where it wins. Full in-state tuition is guaranteed for four years, and extra awards can add up to $30,000 a year toward living costs. The GRE is not needed.
What you give up. Applicants need a biostatistics course from the last three years and a graduate nursing research course before admission, so budget time to finish those first.
Funding. 'UCLA School of Nursing PhD students are guaranteed full in-state tuition support funding for the first four years of their program,' a non-resident supplemental tuition grant covers non-residents in year one, and additional funding opportunities 'can provide up to $30,000 in annual financial support to be allocated towards room, board, and ordinary living expenses, in addition to full tuition and fee coverage.'
Research. health of diverse and vulnerable populations, older adults, persons with chronic and communicable diseases.

An MSN holder meets a methods fork in the second year: a quantitative track or a sociology and qualitative track, chosen after you have seen how you work.
Where it wins. In-state tuition and fees are covered for three years with a stipend of $18,000 for 2026-27, and the GRE is not required.
What you give up. The funding window is three years against a stated three to four years to finish, and a six-unit research residency comes before the qualifying exam.
Funding. 'In-state tuition and fees are fully covered for the first three years,' plus a stipend of $22,000 for students entering fall 2024 in 2024-2025, $18,000 for 2025-2026 and $18,000 for 2026-2027, with additional scholarships, grants and employment possible in later years.

Every track is online, so a master's-prepared nurse can keep a clinic or faculty post while working through the degree part-time.
Where it wins. Tuition is $471 per credit. A Roswell Park oncology nurse scientist training program runs alongside the PhD for nurses interested in cancer research.
What you give up. UB discourages more than 20 hours of outside work during full-time coursework, and scholarship money for part-time students is limited.
Funding. The school notes that scholarships for part-time students are limited; Early Assurance participants are eligible for scholarships and federal traineeship awards. No guaranteed tuition-plus-stipend package is described.
You choose between a Clinical Nursing Science track and a Health Systems track, which lines up with an MSN spent either at the bedside or in operations.
Where it wins. Required courses fall on one day a week, so an employed nurse can plan around a single commute. Funding includes tuition remission, a stipend, and insurance.
What you give up. The core is in person and funding is competitive rather than automatic. Part-time students should expect five to six years.
Funding. The IU School of Nursing offers competitive funding for PhD students, including tuition remission, a stipend, and health insurance. Funding is competitive rather than automatic.
Research. Clinical Nursing Science, Health Systems, Behavioral oncology across the cancer continuum, Family caregiving across the lifespan, Nursing informatics, Health policy and public policy analysis.

Yale takes master's-prepared nurses who want a full-time research life: four years with no part-time option, and an oral defense of a full dissertation proposal at the end of year two.
Where it wins. Everyone is fully funded with tuition, healthcare, and a monthly stipend for four years, and students are coached toward NIH F31 awards.
What you give up. Full-time is required, so a working NP must pause practice, and the GRE is not accepted.
Funding. All students are fully funded, including tuition, healthcare, and a monthly stipend for 4 years; students are also mentored toward external dissertation funding such as NIH F31 awards.
Research. chronic conditions and family management, symptom science, maternal and child health, sleep disorders, health equity, palliative care.
An MSN entrant starts an apprenticeship with a working investigator in the first term, so you are in a lab or study almost immediately.
Where it wins. Rolling review with decisions in four to six weeks, plus stipends, tuition benefits, and a first-year fellowship for distinguished applicants.
What you give up. Pitt graduates far more DNPs than PhDs, so ask which faculty are taking doctoral students in your area.
Funding. The program states funding is available to support doctoral study through stipends, tuition benefits and fellowships; the school's scholarships the program describes the K. Leroy Irvis Fellowship as a non-duty-bearing fellowship for the first year of doctoral study for distinguished doctoral applicants.
A nurse with a data or informatics background can pick the AI and Data Science track, while a clinician keeps the traditional one.
Where it wins. Full-time students get a tuition waiver and a twelve-month stipend for four years in exchange for teaching and research.
What you give up. Full-time enrollment is required, so this is a leave-your-job commitment rather than something to fit around a schedule.
Funding. "All full-time admitted students are granted full tuition waiver and receive an annual stipend over 12 months in exchange for teaching and research services," renewed annually "for a total of four years," plus Professional Development Support Funds from Laney Graduate School.
Post-master's students finish 66 credits while post-BSN students need 75, so an MSN saves nine credits and a full term.
Where it wins. Online classes carry reduced campus fees, and the college advertises more than $2 million in fellowships plus dissertation pilot funding.
What you give up. A multi-day fall intensive is required until candidacy, and class meetings run live online at times instructors set.
Funding. College of Nursing page advertises "$2M+ in UCF fellowships" plus nursing student scholarships and pilot funding for dissertation research; the degree the program describes fellowships, assistantships and tuition support but states no guaranteed package.

Where it wins. Sixty credits at $516 each, and a new cohort starts each May, so there is a clear annual start date.
What you give up. Expect about four years plus the dissertation, and no funding package comes with the seat.
Research. Cutting-edge research that advances nursing education, Instructional practices in nursing education, Faculty and nursing leadership development.

A cohort model keeps an MSN holder moving with classmates: coursework runs year-round across seven semesters before the dissertation.
Where it wins. The school reports an 83 percent completion rate for entering students, a number few programs publish.
What you give up. Three week-long campus immersions a year for three years is real travel, and a seven-year overall limit applies.

The MS-PhD plan is full-time for three years at 64 credits, a shorter calendar than the 79-credit BSN path.
Where it wins. Online coursework plus one yearly RISE week in Tucson, and the college directs students to a faculty loan program with 85 percent forgiveness.
What you give up. The college reports 4.6 years on average overall, so plan beyond the three-year plan, and no tuition-and-stipend package is described.
Funding. The college points PhD students to the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP), 'which provides up to 85% loan forgiveness for PhD graduates who teach full-time for four years at an accredited nursing school.' No guaranteed tuition-and-stipend package is described.
At application you choose Biobehavioral Sciences, Caring Science, or Health Care Systems Research, so an MSN nurse commits to a lane early.
Where it wins. Nurse Faculty Loan Program participation and Jonas Philanthropies grants are available, and part-time study is possible.
What you give up. Three on-campus intensives a year in Aurora, including a five-day cohort week, add travel, and funding is not guaranteed.
Funding. Nurse Faculty Loan Program participation and Jonas Philanthropies grant money, plus general scholarships and financial aid. Funding is not guaranteed.

PhD electives can become a graduate certificate in Teaching in Nursing and Health Professions or in real-world data research, so an MSN nurse leaves with an extra credential.
Where it wins. Assistantships bring a stipend, tuition remission, and health insurance, and the Conway Scholarship covers full in-state tuition.
What you give up. Classes meet in person one day a week in Baltimore, and funding is not guaranteed to everyone admitted.
Funding. Graduate assistantships provide 'stipend, tuition remission, in-state status, and paid student health insurance'; merit scholarships of $1,500-$3,000 per semester and the Conway Scholarship (full in-state tuition and fees) are also listed, but funding is not guaranteed to all admitted students.

Barry's 50-credit post-master's plan is paired with the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, which fits a nurse aiming for a faculty post.
Where it wins. Loan support of up to $40,000 a year with 85 percent forgiven after four years of full-time teaching. A post-DNP path needs only 30 credits.
What you give up. Part of the didactic work uses video instruction, and the GPA minimum is 3.3.
Funding. Through the federal Nurse Faculty Loan Program, PhD in Nursing students may receive up to $40,000 per year in loan support, with up to 85% of the balance forgiven over four years of full-time teaching in an accredited school of nursing.
An MSN nurse picks a concentration at admission, biobehavioral research or health care quality research, each with its own six-hour course block.
Where it wins. Online coursework in 58 credits with no GRE, and teaching assistantships that cover tuition and pay a stipend.
What you give up. On-campus immersions each semester and a 20-hour weekly assistantship load. The degree must be done within eight years.
Funding. Graduate teaching assistantships "cover tuition and offer a stipend" but require registration for at least 9 credit hours, good academic standing and 20 hours of work per week; they are not guaranteed to all admitted students.
Research. biobehavioral research, health care quality research.
This degree treats the master's as a starting point for teaching, with a Nursing Education focus and a doctorate in 66 credits.
Where it wins. Tuition is a flat $802 per credit for in-state and out-of-state students, and a five-day summer orientation connects you with faculty.
What you give up. Expect four years or more with a fourth year given entirely to the dissertation, and no funding package.
Funding. No funding package is offered; students pay a flat per-credit tuition rate and are directed to FAFSA-based federal financial aid.

Published timelines run from three years full-time to five or more part-time, and the dissertation often adds time. How long a nursing PhD takes explains why the stated figure runs short.
Can a Nurse Practitioner Get a PhD in Nursing?
Yes. Nurse practitioners are among the most common applicants. The PhD adds research training and does not change your practice license.
Do MSN to PhD Programs Require the GRE?
Many no longer do. The no-GRE ranking lists the programs that have dropped it, and some of the programs here are on it.
Is an MSN to PhD Faster Than a BSN to PhD?
Usually, because your master's credits count toward the coursework. The size of the saving depends on the school, so compare the credit totals program by program.
Should You Get a DNP or a PhD After Your MSN?
Choose the PhD if you want to design and run studies or work in a research faculty role. Choose the DNP if you want to lead clinical practice. The PhD versus DNP guide compares them in detail.
