PhD Nursing Programs

Nursing PhD programs you can enter with a BSN

Best BSN to PhD Nursing Programs, Ranked (2026)

These nursing PhD programs take you straight from a BSN. You skip the master's, which saves the tuition and most of the two years it would have cost, and you finish with the same doctorate. Research-focused schools now prefer this route, because it gets a nurse into research training earlier.

What You Give up by Skipping the Master's

An APRN licence, mostly. A BSN-to-PhD route trains you as a researcher, not as a nurse practitioner or a clinical nurse specialist, so you come out with a doctorate and the same clinical scope you went in with. If you want to prescribe, you need the MSN or DNP, and doing the PhD first does not get you there.

Some programs soften this by awarding a master's on the way through, usually after the first 30 credits or so. That is worth asking about, because it gives you something to hold if you leave, and doctoral attrition is real.

You also arrive with less clinical seniority than the MSN-entry students beside you, and in a field where research questions come out of practice, that occasionally shows. It is not a reason to avoid the route. It is a reason to keep working clinically part time if the program lets you.

How Much Longer a BSN-to-PhD Takes

Roughly a year, sometimes two. You pick up the master's-level theory and methods coursework that MSN-entry students already have, then join the same doctoral sequence. So where a post-master's PhD runs three to four years, a BSN-entry route usually runs four to six.

That still beats doing them separately. A master's plus a post-master's PhD is two admissions, two sets of fees and usually more total years, and the master's coursework you paid for gets partly repeated.

The Top 25 Best BSN to PhD Nursing Programs, One by One

UW Seattle

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD)

Seattle, WA · Public · scores 93.8

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

The master's arrives at the end of year one, gated on the preliminary exam rather than on a credit count, so the extra ground a BSN entrant covers gets banked as a credential early instead of at the very end.

Where it wins. Ten statistics credits are required and an optional concentration adds at least fourteen more, which is exactly the methods training a nurse without a master's thesis is missing. Thirteen PhDs conferred against zero DNPs means that training is the school's main doctoral business.

What you give up. That master's hangs on a single first-year exam, and the statistics concentration adds fourteen credits onto a ninety-six credit degree with a three-year package behind it, so the optional depth has to fit a window that doesn't stretch.

Funding. All full-time PhD students receive a three-year funding package, including tuition and a stipend.

Research. Symptom science, Laboratory sciences, Health promotion and disease management across the lifespan, Policy analysis and advancement of cost-effective health care systems, Health equity, Innovative methodologies.

University of Pennsylvania

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Philadelphia, PA · Private nonprofit · scores 90.5

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

Penn holds close to one federal nursing research dollar in seven on this list, and it admits somewhere between six and twelve people a year against that money. The ratio, not the reputation, is what a BSN entrant is actually buying.

Where it wins. Ninety-six NINR awards ran through this school across five fiscal years, roughly nineteen live studies a year against a cohort of six to twelve. You aren't pitching a project into the void, you're picking which funded one to attach yourself to.

What you give up. The coursework is fourteen units with no clinical component, so the extra years a BSN entrant spends here produce a researcher and nothing that appears on a license. Four years of support against an outside edge of five leaves year five to you.

Funding. Penn Nursing commits to assisting all full-time PhD students for four years of tuition, fees, living stipend, and health insurance, funded internally or externally; part-time students pay their own tuition, fees and health insurance.

Columbia

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

New York, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 85.7

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

The MPhil is handed over when you pass the qualifying exam, so a BSN entrant picks up a graduate credential mid-degree without ever enrolling in a master's. The PhD itself is gated on a published paper, a submitted grant and a presented abstract.

Where it wins. Eight semesters of tuition, fees, insurance and stipend, with $33.6 million of NINR money across 82 awards behind them, means the years you'd otherwise spend paying for a master's are years Columbia pays you to learn methods instead.

What you give up. Full-time registration is mandatory throughout and the money stops after three years while completion runs three to four, so the final stretch can land unpaid with no option to slow down and work.

Funding. "Columbia Nursing provides three years (eight semesters) of funding for tuition, related fees, health insurance, and a stipend for full-time PhD students."

Research. health disparity populations, clinical, translational and health services research.

Duke University

PhD Program in Nursing

Durham, NC · Private nonprofit · scores 85.6

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

Funding is written for five years while the program is published as three to four, which inverts the usual arrangement. BSN entrants are the ones who overrun, and this is the rare place where the overrun year is already paid for.

Where it wins. Elective seats open at UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State and NC Central under inter-institutional agreements, so a BSN entrant filling in master's-level breadth pulls from four universities instead of one department's catalog. The credit load, fifty-two, is the second lightest here.

What you give up. Ask how many students your target faculty member currently advises, because this school graduates roughly fifteen practice doctorates for every research one, and the PhD cohort is the smaller claim on anyone's time.

Funding. "Ph.D. student tuition and 12-month stipends are fully funded for up to five years," with a package that "should provide financial support (tuition, stipend, health insurance) for the majority of the time you are registered and working toward your degree."

Research. health equity, social determinants of health (SDOH), nurse-led models of care.

New York University

Florence S. Downs PhD Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development

New York, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 84.9

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

The bachelor's route is 72 credits against 46 for post-master's entrants, twenty-six credits of difference, and the four-year funding guarantee runs a year past the three-year plan of study. The extra year is the one already paid for.

Where it wins. Twenty-six credits at $2,596 each is about $67,500 of coursework separating the two entry routes, and remission is written to cover required coursework, so the master's-level year gets absorbed rather than billed.

What you give up. The part-time track opens with the Fall 2026 cohort, so nobody has finished it yet, and part-time groups of four students leave almost no bench if your question drifts from the faculty who admitted you.

Funding. "We guarantee all students four years of funding, including tuition, stipend, and health insurance"; the full-time option "includes stipend support, benefits, and tuition remission for required coursework."

Research. Aging and Serious Illness, Health Services Research, Maternal, Reproductive, and Child Health, Population Precision Health and Chronic Conditions.

University of California-Los Angeles

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Los Angeles, CA · Public · scores 81.9

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

Three separate course sequences run here depending on what you walk in holding, so BSN entry is a designed route rather than an accommodation squeezed onto the master's plan. Every doctoral degree this school awards is a research degree.

Where it wins. Top-up funding reaches $30,000 a year for living costs on top of tuition and fees, against a published cost of attendance of $41,990. That covers roughly seven-tenths of a Los Angeles year before you borrow anything, which is unusual for a public school in that city.

What you give up. Two prerequisites land before you apply rather than after: a graduate nursing research course, and biostatistics taken within the last three years. Out-of-state, the nonresident supplement is covered once, so California residency has to be established during year one.

Funding. 'UCLA School of Nursing PhD students are guaranteed full in-state tuition support funding for the first four years of their program,' a non-resident supplemental tuition grant covers non-residents in year one, and additional funding opportunities 'can provide up to $30,000 in annual financial support to be allocated towards room, board, and ordinary living expenses, in addition to full tuition and fee coverage.'

Research. health of diverse and vulnerable populations, older adults, persons with chronic and communicable diseases.

University of California-San Francisco

PhD, Nursing

San Francisco, CA · Public · scores 81.7

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

Six units of research residency, taken three units a quarter before the qualifying exam, is where a BSN entrant gets the mentored research experience a master's thesis would otherwise have supplied. It's built into the schedule rather than arranged by you.

Where it wins. Tuition and fee coverage begins the term you arrive rather than after a master's year, and the second-year fork into quantitative or qualitative methods lets you commit to a lane once you've done real research instead of before.

What you give up. Coverage is written at the in-state rate and runs three years against a three-to-four-year finish, so a BSN entrant who needs the longer end of that range arranges the last year alone, in one of the country's most expensive cities.

Funding. 'In-state tuition and fees are fully covered for the first three years,' plus a stipend of $22,000 for students entering fall 2024 in 2024-2025, $18,000 for 2025-2026 and $18,000 for 2026-2027, with additional scholarships, grants and employment possible in later years.

University at Buffalo

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Program

Buffalo, NY · Public · scores 81.4

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

The Early Assurance track admits BSN seniors before they graduate, so the decision gets made while you're still a student instead of five years into floor work. Nobody else on this page catches people that early.

Where it wins. Early Assurance students finish the BSN, sit the NCLEX and start the PhD part-time that same fall, which puts the first staff job and the doctorate in one year rather than a decade apart. An oncology nurse scientist track runs alongside it with Roswell Park.

What you give up. The school discourages more than twenty hours of outside work a week during coursework and dissertation, so a route built for employed nurses asks you to go half-time at the hospital while paying $471 a credit across a window that can run seven years.

Funding. The school notes that scholarships for part-time students are limited; Early Assurance participants are eligible for scholarships and federal traineeship awards. No guaranteed tuition-plus-stipend package is described.

Indiana University-Indianapolis

PhD in Nursing Science

Indianapolis, IN · Public · scores 80.3

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

One core curriculum splits into two named tracks, Clinical Nursing Science or Health Systems, which means you pick a research specialty inside the PhD rather than needing a master's specialty to arrive with. Ninety credits is what that costs.

Where it wins. Eight PhDs and eight DNPs conferred, an even split, so the research degree isn't the small program in the building, and every student is paired with a faculty researcher from the start rather than after a topic is settled.

What you give up. Keeping a job means the part-time route, which runs five to six years against three to four full time, and funding is competitive rather than attached to admission, so the money is a second decision you wait on.

Funding. The IU School of Nursing offers competitive funding for PhD students, including tuition remission, a stipend, and health insurance. Funding is competitive rather than automatic.

Research. Clinical Nursing Science, Health Systems, Behavioral oncology across the cancer continuum, Family caregiving across the lifespan, Nursing informatics, Health policy and public policy analysis.

Ohio State University

PhD in Nursing

Columbus, OH · Public · scores 79.4

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

Every student here submits an external grant application, with the instruction starting in year one and a reported sixty-five percent success rate on submissions over three years. A BSN entrant walks in with no funding record and walks out holding one.

Where it wins. This college awards research doctorates and no practice doctorates at all, forty-eight of them, the second-largest research output on this page. Pair that with the grant requirement and you graduate with the track record post-master's applicants spend a career assembling.

What you give up. The award runs three years against a program published at three to five, so up to two years can land on you at $854.63 a credit, on top of twenty assistantship hours a week and two days a week in Columbus.

Funding. College of Nursing PhD Scholars awards cover "up to three years of tuition and instructional fees, stipend, and health insurance contingent on satisfactory academic progress and performance as a Graduate Research/Teaching Associate," with a 20-hour weekly work requirement; faculty also nominate applicants for University Fellowships. Awards are competitive rather than automatic.

Research. Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care, Martha S. Pitzer Center for Women, Children and Youth, Translational Biosciences Laboratory, Stress Science Laboratory.

Pitt

PhD in Nursing

Pittsburgh, PA · Public · scores 79.2

  • BSN-to-PhD

Both entry tracks have run here since 1954, which is a long time to have been moving nurses from a bachelor's into research, and applications get read as they arrive rather than once a year.

Where it wins. The Irvis Fellowship carries no teaching or assistantship duties in the first year of doctoral study, which is the year a BSN entrant has the steepest climb, and the apprenticeship with a working investigator starts that same term.

What you give up. At $1,305 a credit, any term the fellowships and tuition benefits don't reach gets expensive fast, and with 69 DNPs conferred against six PhDs, the doctoral volume in the building sits on the practice side.

Funding. The program states funding is available to support doctoral study through stipends, tuition benefits and fellowships; the school's scholarships the program describes the K. Leroy Irvis Fellowship as a non-duty-bearing fellowship for the first year of doctoral study for distinguished doctoral applicants.

Galveston, TX · Public · scores 78.9

  • BSN-to-PhD

Nine credits and one semester is the entire gap between the BSN plan and the master's-entry plan here, which makes this the smallest premium on the page for skipping the master's. The catch isn't the money.

Where it wins. At $392 a credit it comes in under half of what any campus program on this page charges, and the only travel is four or five days in Galveston each August. Nine semesters of coursework, then the dissertation, run from wherever you already live.

What you give up. The BSN route is full-time only. Master's-entry students here can go part-time and most do, taking two courses a semester, so the pathway that lets you keep a job is the one you aren't eligible for. Plan on leaving the floor.

The stipend renews one year at a time and the package tops out at four years, which is fine for a post-master's student and tight for a BSN entrant who needs every one of those renewals to reach a defense.

Where it wins. A T32 training grant in women's health and intersectionality funds predoctoral trainees in data science and health information technology, a paid slot aimed at people starting doctoral training rather than finishing it, with $28.3 million of NINR money behind the faculty.

What you give up. Four years without a nurse's income is the actual entry price, since outside work is capped at ten hours a week and no part-time route exists. Applications close November 1.

Funding. "All full-time admitted students are granted full tuition waiver and receive an annual stipend over 12 months in exchange for teaching and research services," renewed annually "for a total of four years," plus Professional Development Support Funds from Laney Graduate School.

This is the heaviest coursework requirement of any online program on the page, ninety credits, attached to one of the smallest bills at $247 apiece. You pay for this degree in semesters rather than in dollars.

Where it wins. Going part-time costs about a year here, four to five instead of three to four, where the part-time route elsewhere on this page stretches past six. Classes run four to six students a year, so nobody sits in the back unnoticed.

What you give up. Practice doctorates outnumber research ones twelve to one in this college, so the PhD is the small program in the building and those ninety credits sit on your own money. Ask who has chaired a dissertation here, and how recently.

Funding. Multiple scholarship and pre-doctoral funding opportunities are advertised, but no guaranteed funding package is described.

Orlando, FL · Public · scores 76.9

  • BSN-to-PhD

Nine credits is the whole difference between entering with a bachelor's and entering with a master's, about $3,300 at the published rate. Very little about this degree changes because you skipped the master's, which is unusual.

Where it wins. Seventy-five credits at $369.65 puts the entire bachelor's-to-doctorate tuition near $27,700, part-time study stays available the whole way, and the campus intensives stop once you reach candidacy rather than following you to the defense.

What you give up. Sixty-five DNPs against four PhDs, and $2.7 million of NINR money across nine awards, means you'll probably bring your own question rather than join a funded study already running, and the fellowship money is competitive.

Funding. College of Nursing page advertises "$2M+ in UCF fellowships" plus nursing student scholarships and pilot funding for dissertation research; the degree the program describes fellowships, assistantships and tuition support but states no guaranteed package.

University of Utah

PhD in Nursing

Salt Lake City, UT · Public · scores 76.5

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time
  • Hybrid

Seven semesters of year-round coursework plus a one to two year dissertation puts a realistic finish between three and a half and four and a half years, inside a seven-year limit. The published eighty-three percent completion rate says about one in six doesn't get there.

Where it wins. No other program on this page that you can do from a distance holds more federal nursing research money, $17.9 million across twenty-eight awards. The research machinery behind the distance format is the same machinery the campus students are working inside.

What you give up. Three week-long immersions plus a cohort conference every year for three years works out to roughly a dozen trips to Salt Lake City before you reach the dissertation. Budget the flights and the time off, because the hybrid label hides them.

South Dakota State University

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Brookings, SD · Public · scores 76.4

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

Teaching is the exit this program is built for. Thirty credits separate the bachelor's track from the post-master's one, about $14,900, and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program forgives up to 85 percent of it if you teach four years after.

Where it wins. Run the forgiveness against the entry premium and those thirty extra credits cost roughly $2,200 once 85 percent comes back. Nothing has to be attended in person, and every emphasis is built to be taken part-time while you keep working.

What you give up. Forgiveness costs four years inside a nursing school after you finish, pacing is negotiated individually rather than set by a cohort, and no NINR money sits behind the faculty to fund a research assistantship.

Funding. There is no blanket funding guarantee; the program is built as a part-time online path for employed nurses. The College of Nursing administers a Nurse Faculty Loan Program under which "tuition and fees are funded for graduate nursing students who intend to teach in an accredited school of nursing," with up to 85% of the loan forgiven after a four-year post-graduation teaching commitment, and it is offered to Ph.D. students each semester. Separately, Graduate School assistantships waive all tuition and fees except the per-credit General Activity Fee, and the college awarded over $468,500 in scholarships in 2025.

Research. Health promotion and disease prevention in underserved and rural populations, Health outcomes, Nursing education.

University of Cincinnati

PhD in Nursing

Cincinnati, OH · Public · scores 75.5

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

A flat three years from a bachelor's, with no range attached, matches the fastest published timeline on this page. The milestone that usually stretches a BSN entrant, the written exam that gates candidacy, has been replaced with a portfolio you build as you go.

Where it wins. Candidacy comes from a portfolio rather than one exam day, which suits people who have never sat a doctoral written exam and lets the assessment run on work already finished. A nurse educator certificate stacks onto the degree without adding a separate credential.

What you give up. The research runs in two lanes, the opioid epidemic and violence against nurses. Bring a question outside those and you're negotiating for a chair rather than choosing one. At $836 a credit, plan on carrying three years of tuition yourself.

Research. opioid epidemic, nurse violence.

Mizzou

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Columbia, MO · Public · scores 75.1

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE

The 72 credits are counted from the bachelor's, not from a master's, so an MSN you already hold gets absorbed into the same total instead of stacked underneath it. Entering from a BSN adds no coursework at all here.

Where it wins. The in-person load is knowable years ahead: three days in June at the start, four days each April until comps are done. Classmates arrive from informatics, public health, therapy and social work, so nobody assumes you did a nursing master's.

What you give up. Seventy-two credits at $681.30 runs near $49,000 before fees, the 3.3 GPA minimum is a genuine gate for an applicant coming off clinical grades, and the last two years of a three-to-five-year range are yours to fund.

University of Arizona

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing

Tucson, AZ · Public · scores 74.4

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

The BSN plan is seventy-nine credits over four years and the master's-entry plan is sixty-four over three, so the master's you skip costs fifteen credits and one year. The college's own average time to degree, 4.6 years, says the four-year figure is optimistic.

Where it wins. It sits at number fifteen among public universities on the 2025 Blue Ridge NIH nursing funding list while running its coursework online, with the only required travel a single week in Tucson each summer. That pairing is rare at this funding level.

What you give up. The money on offer is a loan, not a stipend: the Nurse Faculty Loan Program forgives up to eighty-five percent only if you teach full-time for four years at a nursing school afterward. That's your first job decided before you start.

Funding. The college points PhD students to the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP), 'which provides up to 85% loan forgiveness for PhD graduates who teach full-time for four years at an accredited nursing school.' No guaranteed tuition-and-stipend package is described.

UT Tyler

PhD in Nursing

Tyler, TX · Public · scores 74.3

  • BSN-to-PhD

Twelve credits and about $4,900 is the entire cost of entering without a master's. UT Tyler also reads the last sixty undergraduate hours rather than the whole transcript, which matters if your first two years of college weren't your best.

Where it wins. Multiple start dates a year with decisions landing about two weeks before a session opens means the gap between deciding and enrolling can be a month, and the coursework and the dissertation are both done from wherever you already live.

What you give up. Faculty research runs to education and practice questions, simulation, cultural competence, emotional intelligence, and no federal nursing research money sits behind the school, so a dissertation that needs a funded lab means looking elsewhere.

Research. emotional intelligence, simulation-based education, cultural competence, trauma-informed care in nursing.

University of Rochester

PhD in Nursing & Health Science

Rochester, NY · Private nonprofit · scores 74.2

  • Fully funded
  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

Read the funding line as a timeline. The stipend runs four years and the health insurance runs six, and a school that insures you two years past the money it promises is telling you what year five here actually looks like.

Where it wins. The waiver is total rather than partial, which at $1,740 a credit is the single largest thing on offer. Nineteen NINR awards sit behind one of the smallest research doctorate programs on this page, so live studies outnumber the students competing for them.

What you give up. The post-master's route can be done part-time across five years; the post-bachelor's route is four years full-time and nothing else. BSN entry here means choosing to stop working, and the waiver is written around required coursework, so anything past it bills at $1,740.

Funding. 100% tuition waiver for full-time PhD students plus an annual stipend; post-BS students receive a tuition waiver for required coursework credit, a competitive stipend for the first four years of study, and health insurance coverage for the first six years.

Research. Sexual Health & HIV, Oncology & Palliative Care, Healthy Aging, Cardiac Care, Parent-Child & Adolescent Health.

CU Anschutz

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing

Denver, CO · Public · scores 74.1

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

You commit to a focal area at application, before meeting a single faculty member, which is a heavy ask for a nurse whose research exposure so far is a bachelor's. The payoff is a cohort that already speaks your subject.

Where it wins. $17.7 million of NINR money across 37 awards is unusual behind a program you attend mostly from home, and the three campus intensives a year, one of them five days, are what keep it a cohort rather than a correspondence course.

What you give up. There's no guaranteed package here, so a BSN entrant finances the longest version of the degree, three to four and a half years at $766 a credit, and three PhDs against 43 DNPs shows the college's center of gravity.

Funding. Nurse Faculty Loan Program participation and Jonas Philanthropies grant money, plus general scholarships and financial aid. Funding is not guaranteed.

Research. Biobehavioral Sciences, Caring Science, Health Care Systems Research.

UIC

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Chicago, IL · Public · scores 73.2

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • Part time

The master's you skip is worth exactly thirty-one credits here, because post-master's entrants finish sixty-five hours and you finish ninety-six. That's just under a third of the degree, and it's the clearest price tag on this page for the master's-level year.

Where it wins. Doctoral classes meet Wednesdays and Thursdays only, so a nurse working three twelve-hour shifts can hold both without either side blinking. Thirty-two NINR awards averaging around $222,000 means many investigators with something live, rather than a few large centers.

What you give up. Ninety-six credits with forty-eight of them required on campus, and a published range of two to six years, the widest spread here. That range is honest, and it also means nobody can tell you at admission whether this takes three years or six.

East Carolina University

PhD in Nursing

Greenville, NC · Public · scores 73.1

  • BSN-to-PhD
  • No GRE
  • Part time

The bachelor's route builds a real master's-level concentration into the middle of the degree, nursing education or health systems leadership, so the extra eighteen to thirty credits produce a specialty you can teach with rather than catch-up coursework.

Where it wins. Those extra credits cost between about $5,000 and $8,300 at $277.06 each, less than one semester at the private universities on this page, and cohorts start together in the eleven-week summer session rather than trickling in.

What you give up. The research operation you'd be joining is small, $448,000 of NINR money across two awards and three PhDs conferred against 81 DNPs, so bring your own question and expect to find the funding for it yourself.
